  1. "Does that mean everything they broadcast, including the Mets games?" Dunno
  2. I think the balance of power tilts towards the AL this year (as it did last year) although trying to predict it team-by-team will usually prove flawed at this time of year. I had mentioned in another thread about how most pundits agree to some extent with what Olney said, with a piece in The Hardball Times making an attempt to quantify why. The NL has won the head-to-head in IL play in most years (and has an overall edge) since its inception, although the AL won by a substantial amount last season. Using post-season play - like AS Games - doesn't show much IMO since it only involves 2 teams and a small smaple size. In general over the last half-dozen or so years, the AL seems to have had more teams on both extremes: several teams that were as good or better than the NL's best but also several of ML's bottom feeders, while the NL teams were more squashed towards the middle.
  3. FWIW: - Mike not in today, Chris going solo leads w/the Rangers-Flyer game - This isn't just one of those stories that's fanned by talk radio, it's one that was created by talk radio, and this one duo in talk radio specifically. That it was the first issue they talked about following an opening day win virtually created the "controversy" from scratch. That a couple of the papers then picked up on it and ran back-page headlines about it is due to a Met off-day and a west coast NYY game. - And for better or worse (while we're on the topic) WFAN announces that they'll start broadcasting on-line beginning a week from today.
  4. "A-Rod went 2-5, but he struck out twice in key spots, and got thrown out trying to stretch one of his singles into a double. " The throw out was more Bowa's fault than ARod's. He started to wave Sheffield home then appeared to change his mind at the last minute. Rodriguez figured he'd go to 2nd on the throw - either getting the free base or, at worst, drawing a throw to assure that the run scores. When Sheff stopped suddenly, Alex was cooked. All of which reminds me why most fans think their own 3rd base coach suxx. He never does anything wrong until he's on YOUR team. Farnsworth blew the A's away in a 10-pitch 8th inning ... then Torre went to Proctor for the 9th?!? A Walk, a Bunt (Yes, the A's sac-ed!), an IW, and Scutaro's single later (actually a one-hopper off the wall beyond Matsui but he never bothered running to 2nd) and the home fans left the park happy.
  5. Woke up this morning with a wine glass in my hand Whose wine, what wine, where the hell did I dine? Must have been a dream I don’t believe where I’ve been Come on - lets do it again Do you, you feel like I do? Do you, you feel like I do?
  6. That BP rankings list is one of the few I've seen so far where the top of the list is NOT dominated by AL teams. Most prognosticators think the balance of power tilts seriously toward the junior circuit this year, building on their dominance of last year's inter-league and the last few post-seasons. A lot of that stuff is simply random chance and somewhat cyclical, although 'The Hardball Times' looks at recent trades & free agent signings as a way to explain why.
  7. FWIW: Strawberry looked and sounded better yesterday (heard him on several TV & radio spots) than he has in years, maybe ever. I'm certainly hesitant to whole-heartedly buy his claims that he's loving life these days and is on the straight & narrow, but he's speaking well and seems genuinely agreeable to doing interviews and the like - something that certainly wasn't the case earlier on in his life. Maybe he finally has turned a corner.
  8. The traffic apparently affected THEM yesterday, ergo it's a big issue and someone should be held responsible.
  9. LoDuca to have a weekly spot on Joe Badabingo's show; Tuesdays at noon starting today.
  10. A-Rod GS in a NYY blowout = meaningless stat padding Jeter GS on opening day = a flair for the BIG moment and a display of clutch leadership I like how the TV crew makes the Cano bunt out to be the big play of a 7-run inning. Yeah, there were about 11 BBs in that inning and about 3 other hits plus a Salami (all w/no outs) - but it was the bunt (which the A's screwed up) which was the REAL big play. Two reasons for this IMO: - Baseball media types LOVE small-ball and are constantly trumpeting it as a lost art rather than a relic of a bygone era - MFY types are convinced the reason they haven't won in 5 years due to lack of small-ball play so it falls to the YES mouthpieces to sell that idea
  11. Glavine - 3 Nady - 2.25 LoDuca - 2 Wagner - .75 Wright - 2
  12. So apparantly, "Photo Studio" is another name for "Soft-Core Porn Distributor"
  13. So now we all know that we def got the benefit from the call at home ... but y'know what, it was LoDuca's slight-of-hand that sold it. He dropped and then picked up and showed the ball so quickly that not only did the ump not see it (he was on the wrong side) but even Royce Clayton, who was on the correct side instructing Soriano to slide, didn't see it either. Nifty bit of handiwork by the newbie. I bet he could be a good juggler.
  14. Agreed. Once the Mets made a decision to trade him (enough on that) they can't NOT do it simply because they're afraid of how the new team might or might not use him. Besides, deciding that the reason he flamed out (playing along w/the assumption here) was due to too much/too soon is always kind of speculative anyway.
  15. They actually keep separate records for this sort of stuff: one for single-season streaks and another for streaks over 2 seasons. So even if J-Roll goes onto 57 and beyond, JoeD will still be in the record books. Plus I think it does make a difference. Streak records are kind of flukey anyway but what makes them impressive in the everyday-ness of them and there's a difference when a 6 month break is thrown in the middle of it. I think there's a bigger diff here than in the so-called "Tiger Slam" where Tiger was the reigning champion of all 4 golfing majors at the same time - but didn't win them all in the same year; he won the final 3 one season and then the 1st one (Masters) the following Spring. Most golfers are adamant that that's not the same thing as 4 in the same year although I think it's at least close. There are weeks and months between majors anyway so the off-season break is less of a factor. In baseball, however, it's very different.
  16. Kazmir: 4 IP, 6 ER, 8H, 3 BB, 4 K, 3 HRs, L Oswalt out-duels Willis for a 1-0 Astros win Tino's debut on BB2N: I'll be kind and call him a work in progress
  17. 92
  18. * Braves hang a 4-spot on Lowe and the Dodgers coutesy of an Adam LoRoche 3R HR - lead 4-0 after 2 * Cards putting a 13-1 thumping on the Phils - still just in the 5th * BoSox w/Schilling up 6-2 in Texas in the 7th * Cubbies all over the Reds 12-6
  19. And there was much rejoicing Yaaayy Vidro trying to take 2nd is understandable, but that's an awful move sending Soriano w/no one out. I don't care how fast he is (or whether the call was correct) just the fact that it was even close means it's a dumb move. P.S. Why does Wagner ALWAYS make me nervous?

  22. I think the Bell thing prolly stems from their observation that he had a high BABiP (BA on Balls put into Play) last year which sometimes is a sign that it will come down this year simply based on random chance and in turn will improve his other numbers like ERA. And they may be right although; a) it's questionable whether that's enough to get him to Sanchez/Heilman territory - and BP often takes the annoying stance of acting as if their projections are already fact and the rest of us merely have to stay tuned and see to what degree. IOW, let's actually see Heath Bell have a solid month in the pen - much less a whole season - before we start pronouncing him the stopper-in-waiting out of what looks to be a solid pen.
  23. Well, considering that headed into ST most fans wanted: * an 11, rather than 12, man pitching staff * Diaz to make the roster over one of the light-hitting speedster types - even if he didn't get the starting job * and a young pitcher rather than Lima to make the staff if he proved good enough in ST Check, Check & Check ... meaning things aren't too bad if all we're complaining about is minor differences in which LOOGY has the (possibly temp) assignment.
  24. Zimmerman was something like a 4th overall draft pick and came out of college so doesn't need (and isn't getting) the apprenticeship that Wright & Marte did/are. I think there's a chance he could get to their level and they say he may already be better than any of them defensively.
