  1. I'm sure it has to do with how the DH rule was set up in the beginning: as a position that was truly [u:b091c5ae22]designated[/u:b091c5ae22] for a hitter in place of a pitcher not as just another position that could be swapped around like one of the others. So if you then use the DH to go into the game, or list the pitcher and not a DH (what the Rays effectively did), you then lose the right to have a DH in that game. Listing two 1Bs would be dumb but one of them could simply "switch" to 3B without penalty. What 'shenanigans' was Weaver pulling?
  2. Home whites should be white, not sorta white. Other than that I tend to leave the discussion of minute details of fonts, orange dots, drop-shadows, and the like to others more fashion conscious than me.
  3. ="Nymr83"]The D-Rays LOST THEIR DH by improperly filling out the lineup card listing two players at 3B, Sonanstine batted 3rd and became the first AL pitcher to get an RBI in an AL vs. AL game since 1972. Definitely worse than the double-switch screw up that got Willie branded an incompetent boob during his 2nd day on the job. Also, it seems odd to me that this glitch didn't make Longoria ineligible for the game. Both Longoria and Zobrist were listed on the lineup card as 3B but since Zobrist was the one to actually play the field in top 1 (Longoria was supposed to be the DH) pitcher Sonnenstine effectively replaced Longoria in the lineup and no DH was allowed. But Longoria did come in later to PH and stayed in the game as 3B (Zobrist moved to 1B) while the new pitcher replaced someone else in the lineup. Meanwhile, Sonnenstine had an RBI 2B in his 3rd AB.
  4. Kinda makes you wish M.I.'s posts came with sub-titles sometimes, huh? Anyway, the answer is that bunting early is not only overly-conservative but it's questionable that it even accomplishes what it sets out to do. At best it's usually neutral in increasing the odds of a team getting one run, while the act of giving up an out for a base-advanced absolutely decreases the odds of having a big inning.
  5. If nothing else, just have Castillo swing and maybe he'll accidently move him over with an out. It's not like he's a big strikeout risk - hell, low Ks is one of his few offensive assets. Thought the Pagan PH move was brutal too.
  6. Jerry is quoted in today's NYPost at being slightly concerned with the "slow healing" of Reyes's calf strain.
  7. 90% of programming on ESPN is spent directing viewers to what else is, or is coming up, on ESPN.
  8. Well that soitenly sucked.
  9. And it only delayed the inevitable as a Damon HR makes it 3 MFY walk-off wins in a row. That was a great play an inning earlier though. Gardner on 2nd, a semi-hard smash up the middle caused the pitcher to do one of those behind the back swipes. He didn't glove it but wound up smacking it directly back towards the plate. Mauer grabbed it and pumped towards 1st but he had no shot. Gardner sees the pump and keeps coming. Mauer saw him just in time and charged back towards the plate where he won the battle of the head-first dives.

  11. Oh yes and open book, insert game.
  12. "The Mets have never swept a four-game series in SF" -- Kenny Albert, several times today 1) Four-game series are RARELY swept ... by anyone at anytime 2) Now cut that number in half (less really) to do it on the road 3) then figure that four-game series are rarely PLAYED ... particularly by inter-division opponents where first 2, and now 1 visits per year are the rule Networks are great at passing off meaningless trivia as if important data.

  16. ="Benjamin Grimm":yl8zzory]="Edgy DC":yl8zzory] After the 2005 season, saladoc was trying to drum up a Jose Reyes deathwatch. [/quote:yl8zzory] Here it is. It ran from April to August of 2006: Jose Reyes Deathwatch[/quote:yl8zzory] There was another one of those, also centered around Reyes's OBP & walk-taking future where Bret wants to force an answer to the question of whether the Mets should sign Reyes to a multi-year, mega-bucks contract or dump his ass - as if no in between choice were available. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 15 2009 02:50 PM ="metirish":vwneloli]It's quite fun to read back over that thread .[/quote:vwneloli] For one who wasn't 'around' back then... fun AND informative. To where'd this Bret fella run off? Kong76 May 15 2009 03:43 PM Holy mackerel, I just printed that out to read on the train tomorrow and it's gotta be thirty pages. LWFS: To where'd this Bret fella run off? <<< He was banned, as banned as one can really be, which of course isn't all that banned in the true sense of the word banned. Some were ecstatic, some really pissed off ... heard from him a couple of weeks ago and he's fine if anyone's wondering. Must be the alpaca, I'm answering like I'm on the shrink's couch here. cooby May 15 2009 03:56 PM NO Ashie62 May 15 2009 04:05 PM ="Nymr83"]]and usually where there is smoke sometimes there is fire if you're going to write in cliches at least make sense. Play nice I can see Jose Reyes wearing out his welcome but nothing is going to happen til at least the end of the year. It would be kind of funny if Tampa Bay dumped Kazmir's salary, Ben Zobrist and a top prospect for a still cheap Reyes. Jose gets his numbers in, have to give him that Kong76 May 15 2009 06:34 PM I respect that some Mets fans need to tinker in their heads and whip up trade ideas and throw Kazmirs and a high level prospect into their fantasy tin- kering but ... oh jeez, I forgot where I was going with this. Guess I don't respect it all that much. Anyone who loves the Mets should hope they get his head straight and not yearn and wonder about who they might get to replace him in some off-the- wall 2 am WFANesque caller type deal. dinosaur jesus May 15 2009 07:15 PM I knew Jon Heyman's dad, Mark Heyman. A nice old guy. He bought me lunch once for helping him on the book he was writing. Jose Reyes didn't come up in our conversation--I don't think he was in the league yet--but I can tell you that based on what Mr. Heyman didn't say about what his son may or may not have told him regarding his possible inside knowledge about the Mets organization's 2003 plans for 2009, I'm not prepared to rule out a Reyes trade. Just don't say who told you. I used to be married to his imaginary sister, but I'm not sure that counts. Benjamin Grimm May 16 2009 04:41 AM Was she hot? Edgy DC May 16 2009 06:50 AM I imagine she was. 18. I believe it was mentioned in last night's game that the answer is no one.
  19. NL Central doing OK for itself these days. The first bit of inter-league (booo) is ready to start in about a week and, if things continue as they have for the previous four seasons, the NL records will start getting bogged down in more losses than wins. So today, while things are still balanced, was the first time I shot a glance on how the divisions were faring vs each other. EAST: 8 games below .500 - virtually all of it due to Washington's league worst record CENTRAL: +18 - Pittsburgh's losing streak puts them 6 games under, but somehow Houston is just 2 games under and the other four are within a half-game of each other playing .590-.600 ball No longer the Comedy Central Division WEST: -10 - LA is good and the Giants are keeping their heads above water. But the other three are awful

  25. Carlos be playing with fire on those 3B steals this week.
