  1. I think it was quotes like that which initially sprained his intercostal.
  2. Cedeno quickly signs with Houston where he could likely get significant time at SS
  3. The good news this spring for Valdespin: 50 PAs: 17 for 47 with 5 XBHs (he tripled to lead off tonight's game) and just two Ks The bad news: 1 walk plus 2 CS in 3 attempts
  4. I'm only going with named starters here, although I'm sure I'm missing some. Feel free to note those I've missed and we'll fill in the others as they get the assignments. 5. Anthony DiComo-mlb.com: "Wright will not wear a "C" on his uniform... And there was much rejoicing
  6. Niese officially tabbed as starter
  7. I like that this has Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, plus a little bit of Willard Mullin in it. P.S. I'm pretty sure my father illustrated some of the GSMT stuff way back when.
  8. Down 3-2, Parnell tosses a 1-2-3 top 9 In the bottom Jamey Hoffman? draws a 2-out walk off Jason Motte to set things up for Travis d'Arnaud ... who lines out to end the game.
  9. Has all the QT Checklist points most notably the graphic, cartoonish violence along with a warped humor accompanying all the blood-letting. But then he doesn't know when to rein it in and the ending goes on at least 20 minutes too long so I find myself saying, 'look, I know you're going to kill every single person on the screen so just do it and wrap things up, OK?' oe: one thing I did like was how, intentionally or not, the 'Mandingo Fighting' scene worked as a parody of MMA fighting, right down to the part where DiCaprio tells the one guy that his fighting style isn't exciting enough even though he wins his fights.

  11. This is one of those popular ones I just never got around to for some reason.
  12. Vic Sage wrote: one of the great films of the last 30 years. an epic with heart, and about something other than itself. with great performances. Yeah, this is where I'm at with this one too, although for whatever reason it doesn't seem to get the recognition or be in the rotation as often as other historical epics. So I wind up seeking this one out every five years or so and give it a watch (generally in the winter - it seems like a winter movie to me) and did so just recently which is what inspired this post. Great scenery, great cast (Nicholson's cold, cynical Eugene O'Neil for one) and a terrific script right down to the use of the "witnesses" and their own sometimes fuzzy recollections of the times. Sympathetic to the characters without either being preachy or failing to show the personal and professional flaws and conflicts in their lives.

  14. Of all the ways to describe Tejada, "clueless" would not be among the ones I'd choose. If anything he's much closer to the 'wise beyond his years' end of the scale for a player who, lest we forget, will play this entire season at just age 23 even though he'll already be in his 4th ML campaign.
  15. Sprawling epic from Warren Beatty [star, director, co-writer] about American journalist/writer Jack Reed and his (not always) merry band of literary leftists during the era of WWI and the Russian Revolution. Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Edward Herrman, Maureen Stapleton, Gene Hackman, and Paul Sorvino head a cast of many. Bring a snack (running time = 3:15)
  16. Ruth Ann Steinhagen - 83 Who?, you might ask. Well I would too. Turns out that she was the woman who, as a Chicago area teenager, became obsessed with 1940s-era Cubs ballplayer Eddie Waitkus, an obsession which included not just keeping a virtual shrine to him in her apartment (cards, tickets, photos, newspaper articles) but even extended to her developing a craving for baked beans and learning Lithuanian due to Waitkus being from Boston and of Lithuanian decent. It all came to a head in June 1949 when she invited Waitkus, now with Philadelphia, to a room in the hotel where the Phillies were staying and immediately pulled out a rifle and shot him once in the chest. If this all sounds familiar it's because the incident became the basis for the fictional Roy Hobbs in the book and later movie, 'The Natural'. The two-time All-Star Waitkus nearly died and underwent six operations, although did return to play a full season for the pennant winning 1950 Phils and in the majors through 1955. After an insanity ruling, as well as three years of psychiatric evaluations and Waitkus saying he did not intend to press charges, Steinhagen was freed. She apparently spent the 60-plus years out of the public eye and in relative seclusion with her parents and sister in Chicago to the point where her death in December was only recently stumbled upon by the Chicago Tribune while searching records for something else. She out-lived Waitkus by 40 years as the effects of the shooting may have contributed to his early death in 1972 at age 53. Waitkus - http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/waitked01.shtml
  17. Now that damn WBC is injuring people who aren't even in it!!
  18. Or maybe he sprained his inter-coastal waterway. Probably the part that goes past Norfolk.
  19. It was probably those too-tight straps on the Captain America suit.
  20. metirish wrote: Did you guys know that the WBC is clearly bigger than Spring Training , and in fact this is clearly not Spring Training .....in case you didn't know this Matt Vasgersian will tell you multiple times. Yeah, like I mentioned above, he and Verducci spent last night sounding a bit too much like they were pr agents for the tourney.
  21. I think the true lesson of all this is obvious: Craig Kimbrel clearly hates America
  22. The Yanx seem almost overly concerned with defense in recent years even at corner positions. Derrek Lee was a terrific 1Bman but has been retired for a year and a half. Meanwhile Carlos Lee played last year and they're not considering him nor do they want to let Travis Hafner break out his glove even for a short time and even though he's already on their roster.
  23. NOW?!? Kimbrel picks his spot to Fuck up? How 'bout saving two or three of those hits for the regular season, huh? Like maybe when you're in Queens. Verducci and whoever (Vasgersian?) are trying too hard to sell this series. Yes this IS different from a normal March game ... NO, it isn't the Super Bowl, Masters, Rose Bowl and Stanley Cup rolled into one. I've seen like six innings of this tourney so far tops but it's been enough to see Torre bunting at least three times too many. Doesn't help that the announcers (Kaat and someone in one of the earlier games) keep praising him for it. At one point they were saying how well the U.S. had been employing 'small ball' in that particular game; except that they were scoreless at the time. It's like they think as long as the Sac Bunt gets the runner over then it proves the strategy successful. No guys, it doesn't. Wright to return to PSL tomorrow to get checked out. Might be a tight squeeze to get from Miami to PSL and back to Miami in time for tomorrow night's game even if he does get the clean bill of health.

Longevity and sentiment aside, Buddy was Ruben minus the relative power. Harrelson had, IMO, a better glove & range, better speed (63 BSs of 78 for one 3-year stretch), drew lots of walks (career .091 OBA-BA rate), and did come up just as the most most pitching friendly era since the dead-ball days was reaching its peak. Not that all that made him a great player, just one who was very dissimilar to Tejada.
