  1. I think Boone is quite touchable. Maybe not before the season ends, but if they don't make at least one of the WCs anything is possible this winter.
  2. I hope you realize KC that you just schooled an Irishman about potatoes! This is true! We were looking to retain the name of our college team and come up with a mascot. I met with consultants who worked with us on ideas. I have to imagine that actually changing the names has about five more layers of complexities. The food things are all "alternate" identities. Some are neat, lots not so much. Then they all have the "Cupa de Diversion" latino identities, also with some neat, and lots not so much. I think Rumble Ponies is not a great name, but the Brooklyn Cyclones is brilliant! Almost all of those cutesy two word names for minor league sports teams emanated from the same marketing firm. I forget the name but, IIRC, they were based in San Diego. So, yeah, they'd find something 'unique' about the location and hunt around for a name off of that: 'Hey, I hear horsey carousals are big in Binghamton ... I've got it, Rumble Ponies!!!!' And the Jacksonville Suns abandoned their longtime name in favor of Jumbo Shrimp, and then there's the Yard Goats, Iron Pigs, etc. There's nothing like acting like everyone else in an attempt to be unique.
  3. If it's any consolation -- and, no, I know it's not -- the Mets are currently the best pro baseball team in NYC The Yanx are now 0-5 in August and are 9 games under .500 since May 28, going from 7.0 G up in the AL East to 5.5 out and on the verge of being on the outside looking in in the AL WC race [1/2 G ahead of Texas for WC #3]. Tonight was a 2-0 loss in Texas which they got two-hit by (ex-NYY) Nathan Eovaldi and a couple relievers. Rangers scored twice in the 8th off a two-out/two-RBI hit from Rowdy Tellez. And while our pitching might stink, at least it's not as bad as the Nationals. The Nats have given up 70 runs (and scored 26) over the last six games (to HOU & MIL). That's 11.67 RA/G if you're scoring at home (or even if you're alone).
  4. Last 14 consecutive Mets go down in order. Two of them got the ball out of the infield.
  5. Vogt going with his closer in the 9th in back to back games. He should just use a position player instead, the result will be the same.
  6. Gary: Shea Langeliers (of MIL) didn't get his 4th HR but he does have five hits tonight [and 13 total bases]. Me: The Mets have four [and five]
  7. Last Met to get the ball out of the infield was Lindor leading off the 5th.
  8. The Guardians have six hits in this game, all singles. But they're winning because they have three hits in the 4th to net two runs and now three consecutive hits in the 7th for another.
  9. Matt Festa threw one inning for the Mets in 2024 and gave up 5 runs. In his one inning (so far) tonight the Mets don't get the ball out of the infield. When you can't even hit Festa I think it's time to cry 'Uncle'
  10. Of course some of us used alternate ways to distinguish between the two Bobby Jones's.
  11. Can't dig 0-5 holes either.
  12. Nic Enright, rookie, to pitch bottom 10 18 G, 21.1 IP, pretty good stats in a small sample size.
  13. And with one pitch the odds of keeping the Guardians under 8 runs diminishes greatly.
  14. Taylor would have made it but you can't know the relay was going to be dropped. And you can't take that chance for Soto + Alonso coming up.
  15. If the Mets decide to steal we'll have a situation where Naylor is looking to throw out Taylor.
  16. Run for Alvarez???? Yes they will!
  17. Knot for nuthin', but that's at least the third peg to 2nd that's gotten past Lindor recently. None were easy and all were tempting to glove because each throw was on time ... but sometimes you have to be smarter and just block that thing.
  18. So I guess this Cade Smith guy is Cleveland's 'Class B' closer.
  19. I'll take an 0-2, 400 ft first out of the inning.
  20. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking.
  21. It's a variation on the 'bloop and a blast' theme: 'two gifts and a blast'.
  22. Not an encouraging start for a team that might not score more than five runs in this series.
  23. Well, at least one team knows how to get more than one hit in an inning.
