  1. There's some danger of setting ourselves up for disappointment with all this talk about the Gold Glove for Lagares being virtually a done deal. A poll of all ML managers just a few weeks ago in Baseball America didn't even list Lagares in the top 3 in the NL. McCutcheon, Gomez & Parra got the nods instead.

  3. I've come to accept that opposing pitchers hit like .320 vs the Mets (except w/RiSP when they hit .450) But what might be even worse is that I swear [u:11098dsk]back up catchers[/u:11098dsk] must be at at least .750 And this is not a recent phenomenon either, I'm talking about going back to the Eddie Perez days.
  4. Vic Black likely to miss "a few more days", but the MRI on his neck showed only a slight herniation of a disk which is considered to be "no big deal". And rosters can expand as soon as Sunday.
  5. Mets re-up with Las Vegas for another two year hitch as their AAA club (thru 2016)

  7. 13 seasons and counting* actually, for Scutaro, ten of them where he played in 100+ games. The snag here is that he wasn't a full-timer until the age of 28 and played about as much 2B as he did SS (w/a bit of 3B, 1B & OF thrown in). Now that's a nice career and I'm sure Reynolds would take it (and its .277/.341/.388 slash line) if offered to him, but that's not the same as saying he's the answer to 2015's NYM starting SS question. * although this season's been pretty much an injury-filled waste (5 games/11 ABs) and he'll turn 39 just after the season ends so this may be it for him
  8. Wheeler - 3.0 Carlyle - 0.5 Torres - 0.5 Lagares - 1.5 Flores - 1.5 EYoung - 0.5 Campbell - 1.0
  9. Lagares - 2.4 Duda - 1.3 deGrom - 1.0 Murphy - 1.0 den Dekker - 0.5 Mejia - 0.3
  10. One grounder to SS that should have been an out instead scored a run. And the other grounder to SS that should have scored a run became an out. And that's the difference in the ballgame.
  11. MdD walks on ball five.

  14. Yeah, I'm not getting the hate here either. The BA was pitiful but there were enough walks to make for a merely below average OBA while nearly 40% (20 of 52) of his hits went for extra bases. He played hard, was a decent OFer, and it's not like any of the alternatives have burned the house down or even been able to claim the job full time. The signing didn't work out and I had no problem with his release, but I'm not getting the stain on our house vibe. We've seen worse, oh yes, we've seen worse.
  15. And just as I was considering taking the Tigers off my shit list on account of their win last night, David Price goes out tonight and lays an egg -- 6 runs, all earned, [u:1tsqceuh]12 hits[/u:1tsqceuh], 1 walk, and never even got an out in the 3rd inning. Nice job, ace! oe: Price's 3rd inning: Ellsbury - single Jeter - double Prado - single Teixeira - double Beltran - single McCann - single Headley - single Gardner - single Cervelli - single ... and that's when he was finally yanked.

  17. What I'm afraid of is that he'll become this year's version of Glenallen Hill circa 2000 Hill, at the age of 35 that year, was picked up from the Cubs in late July and proceeded to hit 16 HRs for the Yanx in only 132 ABs. He'd go on to hit just one more HR for the remainder of his career (would have only more 9 hits in fact) for the Angels who would release him and end his ML career on June 1st, 2001. I actually thought of the Bronx as a destination for CYoung back when the Mets first released him. Then I remembered that they already had him early in the year only his name was Alfonso Soriano at that point ( RHB, low-BA, occasional power, declining glove and speed skills) but they got tired of him and cut bait back in July so why would they want him back (although, to be fair, this version is a full 7 years younger).
  18. From a recent 'Ask BA' Q&A at Baseball America Q: If you were a betting man, would you wager that Reynolds is just another Brad Emaus Las Vegas illusion or something more? A by J.J. Cooper: Playing in Las Vegas does make it hard to judge stats. Reynolds .903 OPS actually ranks sixth among Las Vegas hitters with 100+ ABs. Potentially a utility infielder at the big league level, but until the Mets do something about their hole at shortstop, that makes him a starting candidate in New York.
  19. Perhaps this thread was inspired by yesterday's NY Times article which talked about adjustments made to his swing in the off-season by Rick Strickland, hitting instructor and part-time scout for the Mets. ... Strickland concluded that Reynolds was not moving his body in unison as he swung. Adjustments were made and the results were immediate. Reynolds hit .355 in 58 games with Class AA Binghamton this season and was promoted to Las Vegas, where he has continued to hit just as well. And the line drives are going to the opposite field again. Whether or not Reynolds makes a cameo appearance with the Mets in September, he is expected to play [and now has been named] in the highly regarded Arizona Fall League, where the Mets can get one more look at him this year and think some more about whether he can play shortstop on the major league level or might need to move to second or third. Wally Backman gives him the Wally stamp of approval by referring to him as "a grinder".
  20. I think the short answer to 'How Ready' is: Very, or at least 'Nearly' He came out of a major college program (U-Arkansas), in a high draft position (2nd round), and now has over 1,000 ABs in the minors including 500+ in the upper levels of AA & AAA The tougher question is: How good? Does he profile as a full timer or more like a ML sub? His hitting in the minors suddenly shot up this year so is that a fluke (and LV/PCL-influenced) or a sign of things to come? And does he have true SS skills or will he be like [u:3slapq4z]most[/u:3slapq4z] amateur SSs who can hack that position in the lower levels but find themselves increasingly out-classed defensively as they move up? I haven't really heard a lot of answers to those questions yet.
  21. Time to re-visit this thread again, especially since both Ike & Lucas have been in the news lately Duda - for his HR spree that's brought him to nearly the league lead Ike - for the good news of winning the game for Pitt last night with an 8th inning PH 3R HR, and the bad that the reason he was PH-ing is that he's lost his starting job. The Pirates last week decided to slide Pedro Alvarez (and his 25 Errors at 3B in < 100 games across the diamond to 1st base knocking Ike to the bench. He already had been starting only vs RHPs in a platoon with Gaby Sanchez but now it looks like Alvarez full time and probably a non-tender for Ike at the end of the season. So anyway, 2014 Y-t-D Davis = 325 PA; .238/.352/.379; 9 HRs Duda = 471 PA; .258/.352/.504; 26 HRs
  22. * In a game at Toronto that was tied at 4 after nine innings, Boston eventually won 11-7 as the two teams [u:3s12ffch]combined to score 10 times in the 11th inning[/u:3s12ffch]. Sox scored 7 in the top half, then the Jays answered with 3 I don't know if that's some kind of record [cue: Elias] but it's got to be close. * Tampa & Baltimore played a 4-2, 8-1/2 inning game Tuesday night that somehow took 3:37 to play. I don't know how that's even possible. The most logical assumption is pitching changes but, although nine in total were used, there were only two in-inning switches.
  23. Gee - 3.1 Lagares - 3.1 Familia - 1.0 Mejia - 1.0 Flores - 0.3 d'Arnaud - 1.0 Tejada - 0.5
