  1. Opposite Fun Fact: When the Oscar nominations were announced we realized we had seen 9 of the 10 Best Picture nominees, all in a theater except for Maestro. So, Saturday we went to see the lone holdout, Anatomy of a Fall (really good). Have not seen the Indiana Jones movie.
  2. I saw it in the theater. Yes, long, but beautiful with great Robbie Robertson music and some wonderful performances. I had read the book - Scorsese cut out much of the birth of the FBI stuff which would’ve made it longer. I liked it a lot.
  3. Agreed. It was delightful. Paul Giamatti was great as usual.
  4. It was fun. I go hot and cold with Wes Anderson - really disliked The French Dispatch but liked The Grand Budapest Hotel. There are others I've liked and others I've disliked. While sometimes annoying the good well outweighed the bad this time.
  5. Yeah, liked it a lit. Late period Willem Dafoe is pretty great. I'd thought of Pattinson as a lightweight before that but he held his own.
  6. Watched it this evening and enjoyed it. Great performances and an ending that hints at more. I’ve been a Martin McDonaugh fan for a while. The plays The Beauty Queen of Leenane; The Lieutenant of Inishmore and Hangmen were all good as are the films In Bruges and 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri plus this one. There are several more I haven’t seen but his work is always worth checking out.
  7. 2021 was a year of three really great music docs: Get Back, The Velvet Underground and Summer of Soul. My only beef with SOS is that I could have done with more music and less commentary but that is a small nit. It killed.
  8. "I Me Mine" was actually finished after these sessions. Lindsay-Hogg wanted to use the song in the Let It Be movie since that is when John & Yoko were waltzing but the song wasn't finished so Paul, George and Ringo returned to the studio to finish it. I loved "Get Back" which I watched in two installments -- all of Part One and half of Part Two and then the other half of Part Two and Part Three. I thought the exchange between George and John & Yoko where George says that he has a bunch of songs he wants to do and suggests that they do solo albums and then come back as the Beatles was exactly what they should have done. Paul's announcement that they were splitting wrecked that. Paul has recently said that he wished he knew about that conversation.
  9. The doc was too adulatory. They've done interesting music for many years but what is most interesting about them is their longevity. I was a big fan of the Indiscreet album when it came out (and to a lesser extent Kimono My House). The doc called Indiscreet their Sgt. Pepper although it wasn't received that way. I went to see them opening for Patti Smith (the Horses tour) in late 1976 and hated them. Their sound had changed (as it was to do many times) and I wasn't fond of that iteration.
  10. I'm generally not a Pixar enthusiast. I watched this because while at a workshop outside of Oaxaca two years ago I was introduced to the woman who was the model for the grandmother in the movie. So then I had to see it. It was nice having Mexican folklore front and center and was enjoyable enough but I felt the last half was muddled and kind of dragged.
  11. I watched it the other night. Unrelentingly grim. Some memorable disturbing shots but can't say I enjoyed it.
  12. My revised list, adding a couple I've seen in recent weeks: PARASITE ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD PAIN AND GLORY THE IRISHMAN JOJO RABBIT LITTLE WOMEN MARRIAGE STORY BOOKSMART 1917 KNIVES OUT US THE FAREWELL THE TWO POPES AMERICAN FACTORY STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER YESTERDAY DOLEMITE IS MY NAME THE LIGHTHOUSE LATE NIGHT Seen in theaters except the five that were Netflix originals (IRISHMAN, DOLEMITE, MARRIAGE STORY, TWO POPES, AMERICAN FACTORY) plus YESTERDAY and BOOKSMART which were also TV-views. Total of 19 - one shy of a Top Ten and Bottom Ten which makes KNIVES OUT the most middling movie I saw this year, which feels right.
  13. Went into it with no expectations but found it charming. Saiorse Ronan was terrific. I had never read it or seen any of the various versions so the story was new to me. I did like how they adopted the life of Louisa May Alcott into the story.
  14. I like this a whole lot. Comedy turning into a tragedy was super-effective. What could have been a parody of rich Koreans becomes surprisingly sympathetic even though we are following the poor family who we both root for and against. Complex, detailed. Best picture of the year as far as I'm concerned.
  15. 1917 was brilliantly photographed and the cinematographer does deserve an Oscar. The one-shot trick has been done before in Hitchcock's Rope although 1917 is a better film, at least the one-shot gimmick was much better handled. But ultimately the "this happened and then this happened and then this happened" aspect wore on me as I didn't much care about the main character. I hadn't seen it when I made my list but I would rank it about the 8th best movie of 2019.
  16. I've been hearing talk of a Graham Parsons biopic for about ten years now. That must be in some development hell somewhere or other.
  17. Agree on WHEN THEY SEE US. I also liked THE TWO POPES - much funnier than I thought it would be.
  18. My list for 2o19 in rough order of preference: PARASITE ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD PAIN AND GLORY THE IRISHMAN JOJO RABBIT LITTLE WOMEN MARRIAGE STORY KNIVES OUT US THE FAREWELL THE TWO POPES STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER YESTERDAY DOLEMITE IS MY NAME THE LIGHTHOUSE LATE NIGHT
  19. It was okay. Hated the John is alive scene and the stadium reveal. Also hated the album cover bit. Also agree the music was too Paul- heavy. Other than that I liked the actors and the music sounded great.
  20. I agree on ScarJo and the kids were really great. It worked for me.
  21. I love old movies and pretty much keep TCM on as the start-channel. OKJA was good but PARASITE, currently in theaters, is better.
  22. It was just okay. Saw it when it was released, haven't thought about it since.
  23. Pretty much on board with both of these reviews. QT likes to use Brad Pitt to rewrite history.
  24. i don't know much about the neighborhood. I was staying in the Loop and wanted to go there via their version of Citibike (Divvy). Thing is, Divvy only goes as far south as Grant Park (don't want the poor folks to have access I guess). I took it that far and thought about walking but not knowing the neighborhoods in-between I ended up taking the El the rest of the way and still didn't have time to linger so I guess it was good I caught the train. As I mentioned earlier, had an engagement that evening so I couldn't stick around afterward. Yes, still can't go down if you have an upper deck ticket - it was a big crowd so it looked like it was being enforced.
  25. Worst name for a stadium ever. Went to the Sox vs. Sox game last Sunday. Was 2-2 until the 8th when the visitors poured on 7 runs including a grand slam by Xander Bogaerts. I left after that as I had plans in the evening. The Cubs and Cards were playing that night and there were a lot of people in gear from those teams as well as Red Sox fans. I figure they were mainly outta towners who wanted a doubleheader. Looking down from my front row upper deck seat I counted four Mookie Betts shirts, only Jose Abreu had more. Forgettable park other than the fact that there are fireworks both when the game started and after a Chisock hits a home run (which they did twice for their only runs). I got a Chisox soccer jersey. If any of you want it, you can have it. Decent beer selection. Hot dog adequate, nothing more. Many retired numbers: 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 14, 16, 19, 32 and 72. "Races" with people wearing big heads of ex-White Sox. Mark Buehrle was the winner over I forget, maybe Nellie Fox was one of them. Buehrle's number is not retired but apparently is going to be one day (56).
