  1. Cora: done for the season. Rubin: Alex Cora has decided to have season-ending surgeries to repair torn ligaments in both thumbs. He'll have the right thumb repaired first by team doctor Andrew Weiland, then wait five weeks and have the left thumb repaired.
  2. METS: Cory Sullivan CF Luis Castillo 2B Gary Sheffield LF Daniel Murphy 1B Jeff Francoeur Rf Fernando Tatis 3B Brian Schneider C Anderson Hernandez SS Livan Hernandez RHP (7-7, 5.28) The Mets go back-to-back with Hernandez's.

My dad and I stayed through the 6th inning, he just couldn't take the heat anymore. Castillo really CRUSHED that ball. I was so pissed off when the Giants broke up the no-hitter. But all in all, a nice day at the ballpark, and the Shake Shack burgers were delicious as usual. DocTee Aug 16 2009 03:24 PM BMFC: Kuiper and Krukow were ragging on some dude in a chef's hat down the LF line in the first two innings. He was sporting a FAFIF retired numbers tee, that Krukow was able to decipher.
  7. How the hell do you get picked off when the pitcher is trying to sacrifice? The only SF run was due to a lack of range by Hernandez (or even the brains/ability to dive and smother the ball). Oh, how he does stink.
  8. Holy crap. And I say that in a good way, which is nice.

  10. METS: Angel Pagan CF Luis Castillo 2B Gary Sheffield LF Jeff Francoeur RF Fernando Tatis 3B Daniel Murphy 1B Omir Santos C Anderson Hernandez SS Mike Pelfrey RHP (8-8, 4.88) How I hate Jon Heyman, MFY-loving hack. This morning, he tweets: SI_JonHeyman off to mets-giants game. it'll be nice to see a contender playing at citi field. We're aware of the standings. What was the point of that crack?
  11. Mike Piazza was the greatest position player in Mets history. If we're going to hold him up to the standard of Tom Seaver, then no, he's not there. But if we're going to do that, then the Baseball HOF should be limited to those that match the standard of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. I wonder if this is a reaction to his alleged use of steroids or the fact that he didn't pound on Clemens' head. Piazza brought glory to the Mets when they needed it the most. He also brought us some of our most cherished moments as Mets fans. And let's not forget that he helped get the Mets to the WS. Mike Piazza deserves to have his number retired by the Mets.
  12. METS: Sully Luis DW Sheff Murph Frenchy Schn A. Hernandez Johan A big middle finger to the geniuses at MLB for not allowing me, Edgy, Vlad, to NOT see today's game. FOX in DC gets Phi-Atl and the overly restrictive blackout rules prevent the games not shown in your market from being shown on mlb.tv and EI.
  13. Wow, that was a nice win. Dare I say it--an easy win.
  14. I'd rather see Figueroa get the start than see Livan anymore. Figueroa could be part (I'm not saying he will be) of the '10 Mets. There's no way that Livan will so let's see what Figueroa can do.
  15. METS: Angel Pagan CF Luis Castillo 2B David Wright 3B Gary Sheffield LF Jeff Francoeur RF Fernando Tatis 1B Omir Santos C Anderson Hernandez SS Robert Parnell RHP (2-4, 3.94) Livan stays in the rotation (why?), there's a locker for Billy set up, and Jerry is "optimistic" that Beltran will be back this season.
  16. Klapsich returns with crap. Honestly, I couldn't get past the first paragraph. http://www.northjersey.com/sports/Yankees_streamrolling_along.html
  17. Congrats to the Mets. Too bad it took 3/4 of the season for them to do something that should have been done by Opening Day but let's not dwell on that. Four good Mets things in one day: signing Matz; lowering some ticket prices; throwback unis to honor the NY Giants; and, banners/photos/pennants on the walls.
  18. Gammons was recently critical of the Mets for following the slotting system. If they did not, then management deserves kudos.
  19. Adam Rubin writes today that IF Omar is "pushed aside", that John Ricco, the Asst. GM, "will emerge" with the job. If you're going to fire the GM, why hire his Assistant? Doesn't the #2 guy bear some responsibility for the failures that caused his boss to be fired? If not, then is he just a flunky and if so, how is he capable of becoming #1? And why not look outside the organization or do the Wilpons think that they have all the answers within? I don't think that they'll fire Omar--he is owed too much money. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2009/08/11/2009-08-11_omar_minaya_john_ricco.html
  20. METS: Angel Pagan CF Alex Cora SS David Wright 3B Daniel Murphy 1B Jeff Francoeur RF Cory Sullivan LF Fernando Tatis 2B Brian Schneider C Bobby Parnell RHP (2-3, 3.74) So it's been a week since Castillo fell and he's still out of the lineup. Add Sheff to the list of wounded and that means that the Mets have been playing two short since Wednesday. Good luck to Bobby Parnell tonight.
  21. Greg Zaun from the Orioles to TB. So much for a Schneider trade to the Rays.
  22. ="Edgy DC":2x7v4v33]I always thought the leagues should hire folks with PE degrees as managers, letting the volunteer parents assist as coaches. Some parents are nutty and the kids are better off with no supervision..[/quote:2x7v4v33] In a perfect world, there would be paid coaches but "rec" leagues can't afford that. In fact, coaches and parents have to pay for many necessities beyond the registration fee. As a coach, I'd supply equipment beyond bats, balls and gloves (tees, tennis balls, "hitting stick", extra bases, kitty litter to dry the fields, etc.). I did it for the love of the game, to be with my son, and because I loved coaching. None of us are pros and we can't know everything. The SI coaches didn't deserve to be sued. Met Hunter Aug 06 2009 10:15 AM I coached my son's LL team for years. I took the responsibility of the safety of the other kids very serious. So did our league. Our coaches were required to attend both coaching and umpiring clinics. The clinics were taught by high school and college coaches that volunteered their time. Their angle for us was to try and teach the kids properly and they would take it at the next level. The league was very concerned about insurance and safety and were on top of any injuries that occured. Stationery bases were a big no-no at the younger level. Safety bases were used at first to avoid collisions. Helmets with masks for first base and pitcher, even safety vests for batters all at the younger levels. We were even required to inspect the field before games. We weren't in a wealthy neighborhood and the equipment wasn't always top notch. But the group was solid, responsible, and accountable. I'm not so sure I'd want to coach again without that type of structure. Especially after a suit like this one. Edgy DC Aug 06 2009 10:50 AM ]The league was very concerned about insurance and safety and were on top of any injuries that occured. And that's the upside of lawsuits. They lead to new standards. The downside is when they lead to standards that are more irrational than any jury would need but nonetheless so costly that they price kids out of playing. Rockin' Doc Aug 06 2009 11:27 AM I hate that the kid was hurt playing sports, but it is a part of life. I feel even worse for the young man because he has to grow up with an overprotective that apparently has no sense of right from wrong . People need to learn to accept responsibility for their actions. metsmarathon Aug 06 2009 11:35 AM i'd like to know what the injury rate on that team was. did every kid who attempted to slide blow out their knee, or was it something that this kid did wrong? i'd also like to sue each and every teacher on whose exams and homework assignments i ever failed to score 100%. because, if these mooks were doing their job right, and teaching me properly, i'd never ever get a thing wrong ever, not even on the first try, or if i wasn't paying attention during a lesson, or if i was lazy or foolish or just plain doing it wrong.
  23. He sux and he will be injured soon... welcome back Anderson Hernandez! Traded for minor leaguer Greg Veloz. Either Luis is hurt worse than they though and/or Cora's thumb is worse.
  24. http://www.silive.com/northshore/index.ssf/2009/08/staten_island_mom_settles_suit.html I'm sorry that the kid got hurt but as a former coach, this scares the crap out of me. Kids get hurt playing sports but, as we are all too aware of, that's part of the game. This is money that could have been used to buy equipment and fix fields. I'm sure it will also have a chilling effect on people that want to coach. I'm just surprised that the boy wasn't a Met.
  25. I'm happy for MGIM and family. One trip to CF and they see the Mets win.
