I don't see Francouer , Pagan or Maine going anywhere. What would you get for Francouer and Pagan that would make you move them?, I'm just thinking out loud here . Both are young with some upside , neither I would think will bring back a high prospect and whats the point in trading them for a like player. Maine is injured so that rules him out.

Ted Williams: There Goes the Greatest Hitter That Ever Lived
metirish replied to metirish's topic in New York Mets Talk
Maybe the problem was MLB/FOX put so much effort into celebrating the ordinary people that did extraordinary things that they forgot about Musial. The players gathered round those wonderful people who were on the field to receive their kudos and high fived and thanked them in what looked to me to be a horribly staged event. EDIT to mention that of course they didn't forget Stan Musial and I for one was wondering what they were going to do when they brought him out. I didn't get to see the Williams documentary but am hoping to see a repeat. -
Rubin actually has a tragic number posted in his Mets blog today Braves 5, Mets 3: Tragic number down to 68 July 16, 2009 ] If it wasn't clear already, Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Braves cemented the notion that it would be irresponsible for the Mets to make any trade this month, unless it was a swap that made sense for 2010 and beyond, whether that's trading Gary Sheffield for prospects or otherwise. The Mets dropped 7 1/2 games behind the Phillies. And with none of their injured stars returning soon, how can it make sense to go for it? Remember the Mets' desperation in 2004? Trailing the Braves by six games entering a series at Atlanta the weekend of the trading deadline, the Mets dismantled the farm system for Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano, including parting with Scott Kazmir. The Mets were swept that weekend by the Braves anyway, falling nine back. Surely, the Mets won't be that reckless again. (As an aside, front office people wanted to void that trade for Zambrano days later because of his elbow injury, but the highest members of the organization vetoed it, concerned for how Bud Selig might react, I'm told.) Anyway, no sense going over the nuts and bolts of Thursday's loss. Oliver Perez and Derek Lowe were a draw through six innings, allowing three runs and five hits apiece. Bobby Parnell surrendered the tiebreaking run in the seventh on an RBI single by Chipper Jones. *** Meanwhile, from the why-I-shouldn't-try-to-respond-to-every-e-mail department ... Here's an actual exchange: Reader: Adam, From Goldstein's chat yesterday: "Why does everyone kill the Mets' system? Mejia, Flores, Holt, Martinez, and while I didn't love Ike Davis, he's performing well so far. That's a pretty solid top five." Since you are one of those killing the Mets farm, care to comment? I never thought you favor pile-ons. My response: I would think most systems have four prospects. The 2000 Birmingham Barons, which I covered, had Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Aaron Rowand, Joe Crede, Kip Wells, Josh Fogg, Josh Paul, Matt Ginter, Rocky Biddle and on and on. Plus, I know many of the scouts assigned to the Mets. That's what they're saying. And whether you believe it or not, if that's what they report back to their superiors, it cripples the Mets on the trade front and becomes reality. Reader: It's not what I believe, it's what Kevin Goldstein said. Presumably he also talks to scouts. Your answer basically confirms it's a piling-on.

Hospital for Special Surgery is rated every year as one of the best orthopedic hospitals in the country. This year it is rated #2 in the US News & World Report just out. That certainly means a lot to me as my son goes there, his cardiologist when sending us there remarked to me that not only are the best ortho doctors there but it's the best run hospital in NYC.....I guess my point is that the Mets can get great advice and shitty advice and it's up to them what they do with it. http://health.usnews.com/health/best-hospitals/orthopedics-hospital-rankings/ David Wright for one is sick of talking about injured players "I'm so tired of talking about hurt guys," Wright said after the Mets opened their second half with a 5-3 loss to the Braves at Turner Field. "I'm just worried about what's going on here. It's to a point where if we get them back, great. If not, we have to find a way. It's just too much talk about the hurt guys."

="John Cougar Lunchbucket":34fe1t20] Can't go out there everyday playing an old shortstop with a broken thumb. Just can't. That old up the middle saw is only too accurate. [/quote:34fe1t20] Didn't Cohen mention during the game that Manuel told him Cora would be rested a bit now that Berroa is here? Let's see. What kind of team is this now anyway. Doesn't hit home runs , doesn't steal bases , seems incapable of playing station to station small ball.....it's horrible to watch. Edgy DC Jul 17 2009 07:23 AM Well, I don't think their stolen base capacity is out the window. I imagine they'd be attempting to steal more if (1) they reached base more, and (2) they weren't falling into early holes. All the more reason to bat Castillo at the top of the lineup. That psychotic is taking two strikes every time up there and is still getting some hits. Try Pagan second maybe. If only the issue was the order of the batters, and not the viability. Vic Sage Jul 17 2009 09:30 AM But don't youse get it... Cora is a leader! He makes me nostalgic for miguel cairo. Nymr83 Jul 17 2009 09:37 AM ="Vic Sage"]But don't youse get it... Cora is a leader! He makes me nostalgic for miguel cairo. he makes me miss Rey Ordonez, at least I knew he was helping on one side of the ball (even if he was the WORST every day player in the league.) Edgy DC Jul 17 2009 10:02 AM Let's not suggest that his leaderliness is some cheap spin for why he's in the lineup day in and out. He's there, with a fractured thumb, because the Mets are out of options. He's hurting the team daily but the team is in an injury crisis. I'm just as glad as can be that (1) he's not at the top of the lineup no more (though eighth would be better than seventh) and that there's an alternative in Berroa. John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 17 2009 10:13 AM By the way, I hated Jeff Francoeur last night for the first time as a Met. Too many games like that and I'm gonna go on a killing spree. Edgy DC Jul 17 2009 11:59 AM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jul 17 2009 11:19 PM While we're hurting as much at shortstop as anywhere (see table 1), I think our need may remain to be in the firstbaseman/outfield category --- as any help there would allow the team to more effectively distribute the resources it has within that range of positions (where they're overtaxed in many ways). Could make our bench better also. Edgy DC Jul 17 2009 12:45 PM Julio Lugo has been DFA'd. Obviously, he's also been a liability to his team, but, well, beggars-choosers. John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 17 2009 12:48 PM Yeah, we should be on him, but prolly won't be. Nice chart. What it doesn;t show is that Muffy is hitting better and Cora so much worse, over the last 4 weeks or so. Frayed Knot Jul 17 2009 12:59 PM Julio Lugo: worse signing than Luis Castillo LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 17 2009 01:02 PM ="John Cougar Lunchbucket"]Yeah, we should be on him, but prolly won't be. Nice chart. What it doesn;t show is that Muffy is hitting better and Cora so much worse, over the last 4 weeks or so. True. But the problem is that Murphy-Cora isn't so pertinent a comparison as Murphy-Adam LaRoche, or Murphy-Loney or Murphy-Nick the Stick. I mean, you'd expect-- you'd rely-- on Murphy to win any head-to-head offensive comps with Cora. He's been wretched for a hitter this year, and if the recent upward trend doesn't continue (and amplify, frankly) through season's end, the team might have to revise its expectations re: Danny downward from their already modest place. Farmer Ted Jul 17 2009 01:14 PM Shoulda kept Reyes at 2nd and Kaz at short. Living in a hindsight paradigm here. Don't mind me. metirish Jul 17 2009 09:00 PM ="Frayed Knot":2jjco0k4]Julio Lugo: worse signing than Luis Castillo[/quote:2jjco0k4] I'm sure it's been mentioned elsewhere but this from Lennon ATLANTA - The Mets are interested in acquiring Julio Lugo, who was designated for assignment Friday by the Red Sox. Primarily a shortstop, Lugo - who also has played second base, third base and the outfield - is owed roughly $4 million for the remainder of this season and another $9 million for next year, which is why Boston ideally would like to work out some sort of trade during the next 10 days. If the Red Sox release Lugo, he can be signed for the minimum, leaving Boston responsible for the remainder of his contract. John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 18 2009 05:36 AM Adam Rubin sez Lugo is working out at the Mets complex in the DR while Redding is in danger of whacking to make room for him. Edgy DC Jul 18 2009 08:01 AM Good and good. I mean I guess. It's a baby step when we're more than a baby step over the trouble line.

Is that a washed up Eddie Van Halen behind home plate? Also , I never knew Keith had a book out.

Your friend has a great point. If I tuned to an Angels broadcast and heard them clowning around like GK&R do I don't think I would say they are great.... I like the article plenty , I often don't like Keith's boredom in the booth.

Viggo Mortensen From a Q&A SI: You were at the Miracle on Ice against the Soviets? Mortensen: It was unbelievable. You were kind of hoping they'd win, but you knew there was no way it would happen. And right before your eyes, a miracle. It was such an underdog story. That's what fascinated me. Maybe that's why I love the Mets. SI: How did you become such a Mets fan? Mortensen: I came to the U.S. in 1969 and got my crash course in baseball that October when they won the World Series. I've stuck with them through thick and thin. When they come to L.A., I see them play. It's not easy being a Mets fan. You're not a bandwagon guy. When we were shooting Lord of the Rings in New Zealand in 2000, a guy taped the Subway Series games and I watched them late at night. God, that was hard to watch. Just crushing. Horrible. It made me want to kill some more in the next scene. -
