  1. First the Bad news...On June 15, 1977, the New York Mets trade franchise pitcher Tom Seaver just moments before the trading deadline. In an unpopular move, the Mets send Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds for four lesser players: infielder Doug Flynn, outfielders Steve Henderson and Dan Norman, and pitcher Pat Zachry. Seaver will go on to win 75 games for the Reds in five and a half seasons. Then some good news..On June 15, 1983, the New York Mets acquire first baseman Keith Hernandez from the St. Louis Cardinals for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey. The onetime MVP will help the Mets win the World Series in 1986.one more..On June 15, 1969, the New York Mets acquire first baseman Donn Clendenon from the Montreal Expos for infielder Kevin Collins and pitchers Steve Renko, Bill Carden, and Dave Colon. Clendenon will hit 12 home runs over the second half of the season and help the Mets to their first world championship Any thoughts on this day for thse who remember?http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/history/index.htm

  17. Yeah kinda naive of me to think they wouldn't sell the naming rights, from an article in today's Daily News..]Some experts estimate the Mets could get up to $15 million a year for the naming rights for their new park, although Howard says $5 million to $10 million a year is more likely.Howard = University of Oregon sports business professor .

  20. Had a great laugh reading this, Steve Phillips is such a sleaze ball..]It only Sturtze when we laugh at radio booth The Yankees' pathetic road trip did absolutely nothing to stop the arrogance coming out of the radio booth, where dealing in reality is never a priority. On Radio Al Yank, fairy tales can come true - as long as you believe your audience has no memory. When Tanyon Sturtze entered Sunday's contest in the seventh with the Yankees leading St. Louis 2-1, radiocasters John Sterling and Suzyn (Georgie Girl) Waldman went absolutely gaga over the reliever, who they said was a member in good standing of the Yankees' "troika," which includes Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera."They have given up almost no runs," Sterling said. How often have they pitched lately? And what exactly was the Yankees' (troika? shmoika?) record on the road trip when Sturtze entered the game? These trivial matters never should interfere with Sterling's brilliant analysis, only topped by Georgie Girl saying: "Sturtze's numbers go down every time he pitches." Okay, now we knew this was the closest thing to a mortal lock, even with a team that only has a lock on mediocrity. That did not stop Sterling and Waldman from mouthing more superlatives. And when John Mabry was retired on a comebacker to Sturtze, Ma and Pa Pinstripe were reveling in their own analysis. The tee-hees stopped when Yadier Molina singled. And when pinch swinger Scott Seabol deposited Sturtze's first pitch into the upper deck in left field, Sterling was stricken with instant amnesia. He did the Yankeecentric thing. He immediately went into excuse mode."Well, he (Sturtze) is a human being," Sterling said. "He can't be perfect all the time."Justice, no peaceOver in the Al Yankzeera TV booth Sunday, in the fifth inning with the score tied 1-1, the voices - David Justice and Michael Kay - whipped out their crystal ball. These scholars have not learned an important lesson: Trying to predict the Yankees' future is an exercise in lunacy. Whatever. The subject never matters to guys who love the sound of their own voice.Justice launched a solilioquy about the Yankees only needing to win a "close game" against St. Louis to take the series and provide "confidence that they can win close games." Gee, those are words to live by, right?"You're going home. You've got Pittsburgh coming in. This is not one of the dominant teams in the National League," said Justice, sounding a lot like Hubie Brown. "The Yankees can win that series as well."Confused? It's 1-1 in the fifth and this guy is talking about taking two of three from St. Louis, then taking a series from Pittsburgh. Maybe Justice has tomorrow's lottery numbers, too. Perhaps he forgot about the Yankees' performance in Kansas City, where they were swept by the Royals - not exactly one of the dominant AL teams.Kay stuck his beak in. He said if the Yankees went on to win, thereby taking the series, they would "send a message" to all of baseball. The message: "You know what, we're not done yet," Kay said.Yes, we are sure the entire American League would have been quaking with fear if the Yankees had won on Sunday. And following up on Kay's theory, does the fact they lost mean they are "done"?CheesyAbsolutely no surprise Saturday, hearing Steve Phillips, on ESPN-1050, gleefully trash the Yankees.Phillips doesn't have an ax to grind, does he? The flawed former Mets GM hacked away at the Bombers, comparing them to the 2002, 2003 Mets teams he "constructed."Phillips compared Jason Giambi to Mo Vaughn, saying he used to tell Vaughn to pretend foul pops were "cheeseburgers."Then, in "analysis" that will forever endear him to Yankee fans, Phillips ripped Derek Jeter for sitting out two games in Minnesota (June 4 and 6) because he had a chest cold. "You mean to tell me Jeter had a little cold and couldn't play?" Phillips asked sarcastically.Who is writing Phillips' material? Bobby Valentine?Boss talkDuring the fourth inning of Yankees-Cardinals Saturday on Fox, Joe Buck and Tim McCarver gave viewers what they never get on local Yankee productions, a comprehensive discussion about George Steinbrenner. ... Joe Torre with a revealing line on YES' Sunday pregame. "The worst thing about this game," Torre said, "is the whispering that goes on behind people's backs." Originally published on June 14, 2005
  21. From Lou..]"He expressed the desire that he wanted to play everyday," Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said. "We can understand that, but he wasn't going to do it here. He talked about wanting to go elsewhere, now he's going to get an opportunity."
  22. Bong no messing here, I'll be looking for that banner, Gary Cohen and Howie Rose started talking aobut Seaver and game seven the other night but they stopped because they said that whole thing could go on all night, Howie reckoned Gary is still upset about it and going to Oakland will bring it all back out......
  23. i have long wanted a new stadium to be named after Bob Murphy but in reflection it should still be named Shea Stadium, I think there would be pressure to keep it at that, Bob Murphy could probably get streets named around the new place after him,Shea Stadium reflects the history and the man who did so much to get the NL back in town, a NY team that will have it's own Network by then doesn't need to sell naming rights to Bank Of America and get called "the BOA for short....long live Shea.Selig said to be shocked]Field not just a dreamWord of Mets new stadium shocks Commissioner Selig, who says its overdueBY KEN DAVIDOFFSTAFF WRITERJune 14, 2005The news shocked Bud Selig, just as it did everyone else. On Saturday night, the baseball commissioner received a call from his friend and ally, Mets principal owner Fred Wilpon. Suddenly, the Mets had themselves a deal for a new stadium. And once the shock wore off, Selig again experienced the same reaction as virtually everyone else."There's no question that the Mets desperately need a new stadium," Selig said. "With all respect to Shea, all one has to do is walk through it to realize that. Having said all that, this is very important. It's a great day for the Mets. It is incredible."The incredible became reality Sunday night when Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the stunning development in his quest to land the 2012 Olympic Games, less than a week after his vision for a stadium on the West Side of Manhattan fell apart. The Mets will pay for the 45,000-seat ballpark -- Wilpon said Sunday that it will cost about $600 million, although another person with knowledge of the discussions disputed that figure yesterday -- and the city and state will kick in $180 million for infrastructure improvements around the stadium.Selig communicates regularly with most of his owners and is known for being on top of everything in the industry, even devouring all of the newspaper coverage. But the talks between the city and the Mets began a week ago tonight, according to an official in the loop, and four days passed before Selig was notified."I was startled," Selig said, "and I think [Wilpon] was, too."The Mets had been holding quiet talks for the past three months, without much urgency. But on June 6, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver voted against the West Side stadium -- which would have served as the main Olympic venue and as home to the Jets -- crippling the city's Olympic hopes. The Jets' misfortune turned into the Mets' bonanza. The city followed its call last Tuesday with another Wednesday morning; the "official" call from the mayor's office came Thursday. That set into motion the frenzied negotiations that concluded with Sunday's news conference. In 1998, Wilpon revealed the model for the Mets' new home, one designed to pay homage to Ebbets Field. That model has to be dusted off and tweaked; for one thing, that featured a retractable roof, and this won't. But the reminders of the Brooklyn Dodgers' old home should stay intact. The new design should be revealed in about a month.A modern ballpark, combined with the kickoff of their own television network next season, should put the Mets in excellent economic position. Shea Stadium, the Mets' home since 1964, is currently the sixth-oldest stadium in baseball, behind Fenway Park (1912), Wrigley Field (1914), Yankee Stadium (1923), Dodger Stadium (1962) and RFK Stadium (1962).
