  1. I'm not sure this is fair to Posey. The rule wasn't changed because [Posey]"couldn't handle the rigors of catching." The rules were changed because it makes no sense for a player running full speed to be crashing into a defender in hopes of getting them to drop the ball -- but only at one of the four bases. Can you imagine if this was allowed at first base - even if the first baseman was armored up? Now, would MLB have changed the rule if the backup catcher had been injured and not the All-Star? Maybe not - but maybe. What rule change are you talking about? A runner is still allowed to run "full speed" into the catcher and intentionally collide with him "in hopes of getting [the catcher] to drop the ball". As to first base collisions, I don't think that the "Posey" rule even addresses first base collisions. I assume that the rules are the same at every base. It's just that you don't see home plate style collisions at the other bases because the base defenders aren't "armored up", a run isn't directly at stake, and at second and third bases, the runner isn't allowed to overrun the base, but must remain in contact with the base at all times or risk being tagged out even if he initially arrives safely.
  2. or Yogi is at the ASG in an unofficial or “special guest” capacity, hence being in his Yankee road uniform. What other uniform would Yogi be wearing other than his Yankee uni, no matter what game was being played? A Cleveland Spiders uniform, perhaps? The Syracuse Nats? What? As opposed to the MFY Pinstripes as MFY invitees would do at Shea Old Timers Day. The theme of the Mets 1964 old-timers game was the 25th anniversary of the 1939 All-Star Game. Invitees were the 1939 all-stars. The Mets went with an all-star game theme for their '64 OTG, in line with their own hosting of that year's MLB all-star game. Like the 1964 ASG, the 1939 ASG was also held in NYC, at Yankee Stadium. And '39 was a clever choice to honor insofar as "right across the street from Shea", so to speak, NYC was hosting the World's Fair, just the same as NYC hosted the World's Fair 25 years earlier in '39. Anyways, Yogi wasn't invited to the Mets OTG in '64 and wouldn't have been invited no matter what the '64 OTG theme was -- since he was actively managing the Yankees who had a game to play that same day. Bill Dickey, though, was invited. 3. or Yogi is at the ASG in an unofficial or “special guest” capacity, hence being in his Yankee road uniform. Whaddya mean by "hence Yogi's road Yankee uni?" What other uniform would Yogi be wearing other than his Yankee uni, no matter what game was being played? A Cleveland Spiders uniform, perhaps? The Syracuse Nats? What?
  4. It doesn't look like an All-Star Game. Very empty. No bunting. And the pitcher on the mound is wearing a Mets uniform.
  5. Benjamin Grimm wrote: https://twitter.com/baseballinpix/status/1637604869195411457 I would guess that it was the Mayor's Trophy Game in 1964. It was the only year (in the 1960s anyway) that Berra was with the Yankees and the Mets were at Shea. Yes. Also, World's Fair patch + no number on front of Mets jersey = 1964. Casey's probably bragging to Mick and Yogi about his shiny brand new baseball digs.

  7. Well, I have no position on whether they should or shouldn't hold this tournament. If fans and players enjoy it, then that's fine by me. I wouldn't advocate to terminate this tourney just because I'm not interested in it. That's a Republican mindset thing. (You can't have an abortion because I wouldn't. Nevermind that I can't even get pregnant because I'm a male). But me personally, I have zero interest in the thing. Maybe less than zero. And Darling's points aren't persuasive at all. You can't separate the tournament from when they play it because when they play it is the fucking tournament and nobody's gonna move it to after the MLB season. And Darling's glory stuff is bs too because you can use that nebulous argument to justify anything. Anything. What is Darling saying? That they should hold the tournament because some people like it a lot? Wow. Baseball is a deeply flawed game that, dynamically, isn't really set up for tournaments. That goes for MLB's own playoffs. At least in MLB, we have a 162 game season. What is this WBC shit? Single elimination championships? Good grief. If the Mets flew out to Japan next November to play a slate of a dozen or so games against the Japanese teams, that'd be something. But that's a relic from the past. Nobody does that anymore. The Mets don't even play Tidewater in the Summer anymore. batmags-11. Darling-bleccchhh. Keith Olbermann-cool.
  8. Edgy MD wrote: Ron Darling's thesis is YOU CAN BE A FAN OF THE WBC, BUT NOT A FAN OF THE TIMING OF THE WBC. No, you can't justify "anything" with that. He said a lot of other stuff. But you're leaving it out because it undermines your last post. I wasnt addressing the root for this but not that. But if I did, that point of Darling makes no sense either since the tournament and the timing are INEXTRICABLY LINKED. What's next? You can hate red meat but be a fan of the filet mignon? batmags 3 - Darling negative two.
  9. And a week after the Super Bowl, the NFL champs could play the NCAA champs. Think how elated the college kids would be to beat the NFL champs. They could call it the Super Duper Bowl. batmags 2 ' Darling 1.
  10. https://twitter.com/SNY_Mets/status/1636523442106187780 Makes sense , thoughtful from Ron You can justify anything with Darling's logic. Let's legalize bank robberies. Do you know how happy bank robbers are when they successfully walk out of a bank with $80 grand in stolen money? What bank robbery glory!
  11. Well, players celebrate just like that in the Majors, too. I wonder if this Diaz incident will have the effect of tamping down those MLB end-of-game celebrations that often follow walk-off hits?
  12. 24 skiddoo. Let's see what Cohen's ginormous wallet brings in at the trade deadline to compensate. This might cost the Mets prospects.
  13. "...split up teammates based on where their grandmothers got laid." That's fucking great. I wish I wrote that before Keith did. That's a great line. Even if youse don't even agree with it.
  14. Double whatever they're claiming. If they're saying July -- see ya in 2024. 24 Skiddoo.

  16. Lotsa typing for a one-year (so-far) Met. 17. https://twitter.com/baseballinpix/status/1633611623003766786 Eyes like piss holes in the snow Where's Gary Carter? With photographers all over the field, capturing the Mets celebration and taking pictures of everything, Carter was probably running around everywhere, trying to horn in on every single picture to be taken. Guess he couldn't keep up with the photogs. I think that in this particular shot, Carter was running towards this scene and from about 20 feet away, yelled as loud as he could "Hold that shot. Wait until I get there. I'm the last piece to the puzzle! So hold that shot! How can you take a picture without the last piece to the puzzle? I'm the greatest Met ever!"
  18. Tried to prank Topps when he posed for his lone Mets card - batting lefty instead of righty. Topps caught Alou's trick and flipped the negative for the actual card so that Alou would appear to be batting as he did in actual games -- righty. But the logos and uni wordmarks are reversed.

They will torment us this year behind JDD, Flores + Confotrto How many times do the Mets and Giants play each other this year in the new moronic schedule? Once? Twice? I give up.
  20. If history went the other way just a little bit, the Mets coulda had a mid-80s rotation featuring Gooden, Clemens and Mike Scott.
  21. =metirish post_id=119457 time=1678302079 user_id=72] Wow , never heard that Clemens story, kind of crazy if true , but things like that are likely more common than we might think.
  22. Pretty easy to have Gibson's attitude when you also have Gibson's fast ball and accuracy. /rollseyes. Reminds me of the story about a young Tom Seaver advising some other Mets about how to pitch to Mays and McCovey. "Start them away, and then come in with a high fastball about a quarter of an inch inside, about 96 or 97 MPH." Yeah, okay Tom. Whatever you say. Said.
  23. Mets fans will be pissed when Verlander has one of the best pitching seasons in the NL this year but the Mets don't win the World Series. "How could the Mets not win the Series with all the money they're making? They're the best team and in the post-season, the best team is supposed to win every game. Because that's when it counts. And so the best teams are supposed to just will themselves to victory. Because they're the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (Ooooooooooooooh. The playoffs. Oooooooooooh. You must be in The Vipers! Are you in the Vipers?) Oh my god. The Padres took two of three playoff games from the Mets last year. How could that happen? Call the FBI! And Sidney Powell. Release the Kraken! Italian fraud! The Mets won 101 games! Meanwhile, Jake deGrom pitches like it's 2021. Only without any of the injuries.
  24. He's already got the Mets' single season records for Home Runs and RBI's. And he annihilated those marks. So what's next? He probably hasn't hit his prime yet so there's gotta be more records for Alonso to shatter. I say he eats more hot dogs than anybody else ever did this Fourth of July at Nathan's in Coney Island. Totally polar bearish.
  25. Edgy MD wrote: Well, I finally had a full season in 2022, and I was ... good. I was a productive guy, but I lost 33 points off my on-base percentage, and that's, like, my defining stat. You can make something of that. You can say that I fall off over the long haul. You can also make a plausible argument that Nimmo was the best centerfielder in the NL last season. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=cf&stats=bat&lg=nl&qual=300&type=8&season=2022&month=0&season1=2022&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2022-01-01&enddate=2022-12-31https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=cf&stats=bat≶=nl&qual=300&type=8&season=2022&month=0&season1=2022&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2022-01-01&enddate=2022-12-31 In fact, we here at TCG have revised our end of the year all-star selections, to now include Brandon Nimmo as the NL's all-star center fielder, giving the 2022 Mets, three all-star selections, more than any other NL team. And with Lindor and Alonso just missing the cut, you could see how the Mets won 101 games last season. [FIMG=277]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52723455552_45cef5d09b_h.jpg[/FIMG]
