  1. Sports Illustrated fan survey of MLB stadiums- Shea Stadium overall 28th out of 30 ... worst food... 28th out of 30 in affordability. SI link

And I'm sure the publisher and their publicity people understand that staid factual press releases don;lt move books and so you expect a little fluffing from them. Gary Carter strikes me as the kind of guy that would read the manuscript of his own book 45 times before it went out for publishing.

  4. I see. Well ... for another hundred bucks, you could get the matching pants ... and then you'd be all set.
  5. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'm amazed that anyone would spend $300 or $400 for a shirt that you'd feel silly wearing in public. But maybe that's just me. Do you mean that you don't like any jerseys, any of the ones pictured or that you only dislike the ones that you dislike?

  7. Triple Dee wrote: Btw guys, the Mets "Negro league" jersey is now available on sale through the club shop. I'm stoked and I'm buying one now! Do you mean those "Cubans" Negro Leagues jerseys the Mets wore a couple of times, or the Civil Rights jerseys (not Negro Leagues) from last March?

  11. From USA Today: "Country singer Mindy McCready isn't challenging the New York Daily News story that said she had a relationship with Roger Clemens as a teen-ager. 'I cannot refute anything in the story,' McCready told the Daily News in a story posted on its Web site Monday." __________________ McCready cannot tell a lie. Rog did chop down her cherry tree.

  13. http://tiny.cc/VpCAu By Tom Weir & Reid Cherner Country singer Mindy McCready isn't challenging the New York Daily News story that said she had a relationship with Roger Clemens as a teen-ager. "I cannot refute anything in the story," McCready told the Daily News in a story posted on its Web site Monday. "I have known Roger Clemens for a long time," she said, without detailing the nature of their relationship. Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin, confirmed the pitcher and singer had known each other for a long time but told the newspaper there was no sex. "At no time did Roger engage in any kind of inappropriate or improper relationship with her," Hardin said in a statement Monday. "It is unfortunate that the Daily News has chosen to report anonymous allegations that are completely unfounded, have no basis in fact, and have nothing to do with Roger's baseball career or the issue of steroid use in baseball." The News' original story, which appeared on the newspaper's Web site Sunday night and in editions Monday, quoted several people who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation. Clemens was 28 and a married father of two when he first met McCready, the newspaper reported. Today, the AP is reporting that: In its story Monday night, sources told the News that McCready went with Clemens to his hotel room in Fort Myers, Fla., after their first meeting but that they did not have sex. The relationship turned intimate after she later moved to Nashville and became a country star, the paper said. The story could undermine Clemens' reputation, which is central to the defamation suit the former pitcher has filed against former personal trainer Brian McNamee. McNamee contends Clemens used performance-enhancing substances during his major league career. "If the case heads to trial and is not dismissed, as we feel it should be, we will be calling (McCready) as a witness," McNamee's attorney, Richard Emery, told the News. The newspaper said Clemens sent cash to McCready to help her with legal issues and reached out to her when she was in jail last year in Tennessee. Clemens sometimes sent her amounts of $25,000, the paper said. The 32-year-old McCready was sentenced last September for violating probation from a 2004 drug arrest and was released from jail last Dec. 30. The violation occurred in July when McCready was accused of scuffling with her mother and resisting arrest at her mother's home in Fort Myers, Fla. She still must serve two years' probation. The News-Press in Fort Myers reported on Monday that McCready's mother confirmed her daughter's long-term relationship with Clemens, but believes the relationship is strictly platonic. McCready's Nashville-based management consultant, John Dotson, told The Tennessean Monday that McCready is in the middle of cutting a record, and also is in negotiations to do a reality show.
  14. Also, the Cooperstown and M&N jerseys (same outfit -pun!- M&N is the company, Cooperstown Collection is an MLB licensed M&N line - other mfrs. also produce apparel under the Cooperstown Collection brand) are not inexpensive. Those shirts retail for no less than slightly under $200 and occasionally exceed $400 depending on the specific model - thus, the incentive to counterfeit them. (M&N Cooperstown Collection jerseys typically retail in the mid $300's). Here are some real Mitchell & Ness Cooperstown Collection jerseys:
  15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Are these being passed off as authentic jerseys? Or are they just being sold as ugly Mets shirts? The first one is represented as a Cooperstown make. The second one is supposed to be a Mitchell & Ness. These two brands are -when they are what they are - MLB licensed faithful reproductions, more or less, of the real thing - usually an old style of jersey currently discontinued - a throwback. The ebay auctions of those two are, in all likelihood, counterfeits of what they purport to be. The third jersey - I don't know what it is, but it's goofy just the same.
  16. Variations on a Theme: 1987 Road Script Here are a few more goofy Mets jerseys being auctioned off on ebay. http://tinyurl.com/4kgoxg Here's a Cooperstown throwback to when the Mets wore their 1987 road script at home. Or when the Mets wore pinstripes on the road. I forget which. It's a size 60 XXX so it's easier for your kids to share this one. Just stuff 'em all in at the same time and march them off to school. Makes a great tent, too. There's a fierce three-way bidding war for this jersey that's pushed the auction all the way up to $1.55. If only they knew how to share better. http://tinyurl.com/4qf7df The road lettering on this 1987 road Mets Mitchell & Ness isn't long enough, as the script on the real jerseys starts and ends all the way at the sides of the shirt front. But if you like it when the numbers are higher than your heart, than this one's for you. http://tinyurl.com/5zbpg5 This 1987 road Mets shirt features orange trim that's about as thick as the blue characters it's supposed to be trimming. And absurdly gigantic numbers that probably belong on the back side. The uniform top also comes with epaulets and appears to be made out of felt. Nuf said.
  17. SteveJRogers wrote: Not to mention, has David Cone EVER signed, or even been called "Dave" Cone in his entire public life? By coincidence, I was uncluttering the top of my desk just now and I came across a 1991 Mets scorecard with Hubie Brooks on the cover. There was an article inside entitled "Dave Cone - Poised and Ready" The article refers to the pitcher as "Dave" Cone and includes a photograph of an autographed baseball signed as "Dave" Cone. Of course, none of this makes that ebay jersey any more convincing.

  19. I was wondering if perhaps, AH's low Confidence Ranking isn't being offset by Willie's superduperly high Heilman Confidence-Confidence Ranking, which measures Randolph's trust in whatever particular player is being measured. Although I'm not sure what to make of it, to be honest with you. Maybe Willie can send AH to pinch-hit and throw down a sac bunt one of these games. Maybe even with nobody on base so that it wouldn't matter if AH screwed that up. That should boost the kid's confidence.
  20. I was wondering: what's Heilman's Confidence Rankings? And how confident is that ranking? Is the sample size big enough? I would take an educated guess that AH's Confidence Rankings are probably lower than his Heart Zone Rating, which is even lower than his Gutitude+.
  21. I know that this topic's been beaten to death here, but I just came across a Keith Hernandez interview where he talks about his first months as a Met in 1983 and discusses the bad Mets and the Shea home crowds that barely exceeded 3,000. Keith mentions how at the beginning of his Met tenure and after getting key hits at Shea, he didn't realize that the home fans were insisting that Keith take a curtain call, and how it was Rusty Staub that explained it to Keith what it was that the fans wanted. Keith couldn't understand how a team so bad playing in front of so few fans would take curtain calls. Keith nevertheless obliged the fans.
