  1. If Noble's column was written in the style of Wally Matthews, it would be Port St. Losers.
  2. What if this move is a show of confidence in Niese?

Rule them out; they don't have any season ticket holders. Paul Lukas wrote an article for ESPN about tickets last week, in which he linked to a few websites about ticket collecting. I followed one of Lukas' links, and was able to confirm that prior to 2010, the Marlins had at least one run of season tickets that did not include the same image or design on every single game ticket, thus placing the Mets firmly and solely in last place in this category. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/100319 (Last season, the Padres also did the Topps Baseball Card/Season Ticket thingy)

Yeah, but ask yourself: how did they offset the cost? The answer: They no longer give media guides out to the Season/Plan ticket holders. In all seriousness, the Mets actually sent a letter to their season/plan holders saying that because of a "Going Green" initiative, they are no longer going to give the Media Guide out and instead give access to an "online" version, "when available." (Unsaid in the letter is that no other team is doing this -- most teams are instead giving out a coupon to be redeemed for a Guide at the ballpark -- or that the guide is already available online, and the Mets just can be bothered to figure out how to give the online access to their "valued" customers). Like this organization needs to be motivated to cheese out on fan frills. I'm sure that the team cut out the media guide to "save green" rather than to "go green". (This year, the Reds are doing the Topps baseball cards/season ticket thing)

  6. Beer Here! So now that I have your attention, did anybody notice that this year's Mets season tickets print run is not comprised of the same ticket face for every single game? The Mets never printed tickets like this before. They're the last team in baseball to print tickets with different images for different games. (Last year's Braves tickets were printed by Topps Chewing Gum and featured a Topps Braves baseball card on each ticket face)

This is your idea of an April Fool's joke, isn't it? Not criticizing. I don't like it, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Better? Oh, I wasn't criticizing your criticism. I was just surprised. Criticize away if that's what you wanna do. Fine by me.

  9. For 2010, the Mets finally got around to printing a set of season tickets where the face of each individual ticket isn't the same for every game. Teams have been printing season ticket sets comprised of unique photographs and images for each game for about 20 years now. The Mets are the last team in baseball* to embrace this technology. I'm supposing that cheapskate Freddy was waiting for the pricing on this kind of print run to fall below that of the old fashioned tickets. *Okay, "probably". I'm almost sure of this. The Marlins are the only other team that I can't rule out.

I'm hoping that one of them has a big year and/or Davis is wrecking AAA and forces a callup around June 1st. Murphy would look better on the bench. I think there's a better chance that Murphy v.2010 improves on the 2009 Murphy than there is that Jacobs has a better season than the 2009 Murphy. Of course we don't have that option from day, 1 but I'm not going into this CAHNfident that either Jacobs or Carter is likely to put Muffy out of a job. SI is picking the Mets to finish 4th and reports that Murphy might develop into a +20 HR man in 2010 thanks to his new hitting approach. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1167911/index.htm

  12. It's also Stan Musially. We could use one of those.
  13. I recorded this Mets classic on DVD five separate times, just in case I ever get burglarized by a burglar who's hell bent on stealing my first four copies of this game. Is this like the greatest Mets game ever? I can't wait for SNY to show it again. When they do, I'm gonna make another DVD copy.
  14. Hey! Hurry up. Here's Maaaaaaaaaaaaaat! I wonder what's gonna happen now?
  15. Before the Yankees humiliated the Mets in the 2000 WS, before Clemens almost eviscerated Piazza's gut with the sharded end of a broken baseball bat and right around when the Yankees were wresting the majority of NY baseball fans from the Mets, we beat Mariano Riviera and the MFY's in a meaningless and insignificant game. Hurry up now and you can catch that magical last inning when Matt Franco hit a single -- in case you missed the first 289 airings of this heavy rotation SNY Mets classic.

The Magic is Back. Is that the same montage of highlights that appears in the SNY version to production music? If so, gads they're cheap/licensing is expensive. '85 and '86 films were heavy on music video-style montages set to well-known song. I guess Keith Hernandez won't be "The Warrior" when SNY gets its hands on "No Surrender". I stopped recording (and watching) as soon as I realized that the SNY version was edited so I can't answer your question. 1981 might've been the last highlight film compiled from hand-held camera angles and film stock. Most (or all) of the subsequent highlight packages used actual TV video game footage.

  18. I'll check up on this later today. I'd be surprised if the production budget was large enough to allow for the licensing of a Lovin' Spoonful song, though. By the way, I also figured that the film was edited so that it could be shown in a half-hour time slot -- with commercials.
  19. I recorded SNY's 1980 yearbook on DVD. I already own almost every Met highlight ever produced (I think that the 1970 season highlight film is the only one I'm missing) but wanted to re-record 1980 because the quality of my copy is not up to snuff. Anyway, what I noticed is that SNY's version is an edited version of the original highlight film. Among the stuff cut out was Hendu's curtain call. So it's curtains for Hendu's curtain call.
  20. G-Fafif wrote: Bob Murphy, on radio, said with stunnage that Henderson had come out to "take a bow". This may have been the first Shea Stadium curtain call. I don't remember any before (which isn't to say it didn't happen, but it did seem unprecedented). Hendu was prompted to come out for that bow by Gary Carter's locker room telephone call to the Mets hero. It was Carter's idea.
  21. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: How will Mejia's development be strained by bringing him up now? Mejia's main deficiency as a potential starter is consistent command of his secondary pitches, which show major-league-average potential with just a little tooling so far. Not only is he less likely to have time to tool around with those pitches under game conditions because of the role itself (get 1-3 batters out at a time under extreme results-dependent pressure), but the manager himself has come out and discouraged his development anything but the one pitch. Granted, starting one's major-league career in the bullpen isn't an automatic SP-career-killer in general. It will likely be for this particular pitcher, under this particular manager. Well then the Mets wouldn't be handling Mejia's situation the right way. (See my previous post on this thread). Weaver's pitchers, by the way, tended to arrive on the MLB scene a bit more polished than the present version of Mejia .
  22. Earl Weaver broke in just about every starting pitcher he ever broke in, pitching short and then long relief. Weaver's pitchers had to earn their starter's stripes coming out of the bullpen. Now whether the Mets ultimately hope to develop Mejia into a major league starter is another issue, but I disagree with the idea that automatically, Mejia will get ruined pitching in a relief role. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this approach, handled right.* * I know. It's the Mets we're talking about.
