Maybe not the most likely outcome, but far less absurd than projecting a guy who hits two homers in his team's first three games to finish with 108 homers. But the logic is the same either way. It's what one might call an unsophisticated model, but that hopefully makes for exciting times if and when deGrom surpasses such cautious projections, hopefully sometime early next week. deGrom's got three wins in 23 games played by the Mets. He's pitched good enough to easily win all five of his starts. The Mets have 36 games remaining this season. So deGrom's on pace to finish the season with eight wins. (He's pitching good enough to finish with at least a dozen wins). You've got him at three wins for every 126 Mets games played or one win every 42 Mets games played. That's how you get .8 wins for the rest of the season. I think that measure is absurd. By several measures, he's pitching at an even better rate than last year, if that's even imaginable. But once again, it's 2018 all over again for deGrom: the Mets have scored a total of 12 runs combined in deGrom's five starts this season. He could easily be 5-0 with just a little more luck. Anyways, the thing to do is to sit back and cherish his outings because we might never see a run of dominance like what deGrom's been doing these past two seasons (when he's healthy). This is a level of dominance never matched by any pitcher in the history of baseball. He's so dominant, so unhittable, that I'm kinda shocked whenever an opposing batter doesn't make an out.

How are you calculating this? You must be including the first three and a half months of the season that he missed to calculate deGrom's pace. But he's got three wins in five starts so far, this season. deGrom's looking like a lock to comfortably pass Matlack this season and to, perhaps, finish this season closer to Leiter than to Matlack.
  3. Angels owner Arte Moreno is exploring the possibility of selling his Angels baseball franchise. The Angels are currently valued at somewhere between $2.2B and $2.75B. Moreno purchased the franchise for $183M about 20 years ago. It's easy to make fortunes of money when you already have a fortune. That's why all of the money out there, increasingly, ends up in fewer and fewer hands. I could sell, for $10, a baseball card that I paid 75 cents for a few years ago and make a ten or eleven fold profit just like Moreno might make when he sells the Angels. But I'm only making 10 bucks on my ten or eleven-fold transaction -- not two billion dollars. Shohei Ohtani is expected to be traded, say the pundits and experts and according to them, the Mets are one of the two or three front-runners to land Ohtani should he be traded. A good friend of mine is convinced that Aaron Judge will be a Met next season. That'd be some haul if the Mets land those two.
  4. I have The Mets from Mobile in my old Mets book library. I don't think I've ever seen the other old one's cover. Kinda weird, because I used to be pretty anal about this stuff years ago. I have both of the old Cleon books in my own "Mets library". But I get the sense, from years and years of following the Mets collectibles and memorabilia market, that the "Cleon" book that you don't have was published in small or limited quantities. That book just doesn't come up nearly as often as other Mets books from that era.
  5. Coming Home, coming soon. Book signing tomorrow at the Jackie Robinson Rotunda before the Mets/Rockies game. 6. Frayed Knot wrote: This actually increases the odds that a division will be won by a sub-.500 team (see the NFL where in-division games have gone from 50% of each team's sked to 35%) but no one seems to think of that (except me). Not sure how compelling this argument is. If a team finishes above .500 only because of an unweighted schedule where it plays its division rivals disproportionately so -- so what? If you grouped the six worst teams in baseball history into one league where they played each other and only each other all season long, at least one of those teams would be virtually guaranteed to finish over .500 even though all of those teams are the six very worst teams out of thousands and thousands of teams. Surely, there are better ways to determine how good a team is other than its W-L record.
  7. You know, I like to check on the baseball leaderboards regularly during the season. I mainly check the NL leaderboards. But all season long, I've been wondering -- what's the point? Whats the point of separating the leaderboards into separate league leaderboards? Next year, I'll wonder even more so.
  8. And think of all the extra money MLB could make if they called all these games "Playoff Games". What used to be the regular season would be the playoffs. And then what is now the Wild Card round would be renamed the second round of the playoffs. Etc.
  9. They should play the hockey teams, too. Think of all the baseball fans that never got to see Wayne Gretzky play.
  10. Great! They should have MLB teams also play the Mexican league teams, too. The more, the merrier. And AAA teams too. Then we could see Francisco Alvarez without having to wait for the Mets to call him up.
  11. Not for nothing, but Carter's "Kid" nickname was not given to him endearingly. It was given to him, more or less, in the same vein as Pete Rose's "Charlie Hustle".
  12. Gary Carter.

  18. They all lead in a specific category for wearing their uniform numbers in the 40s? Unacceptable. Why don't you just say "Something, something, something, 40s?"

  20. All due respect Batmag's, but none of these men have been in my kitchen! Is that your answer? Because the quiz specifically sez "and only these Mets, have in common". So for you to be correct, every other Met, from Hobie Landrith to Nate Fisher and every other Met in between, was once in your kitchen. You must be serving up some very tasty food. And I'll bet that Gary Carter stole all the credit for cooking that very tasty food. You are going all in to be anal retentive over me paraphrasing a Cheers (Cliff on Jeopardy episode) quip? You are going all in to be anal retentive by quoting a Cheers gag to try and solve this quiz? Did Gary Carter write that Cheers quip? Carter sez he did and if you don't believe him, he'll start to fake cry to manipulate himself into a Mets captainship that was supposed to be all Keith's.

  23. The 538 article underscores the most challenging aspects of fandom: patience and perspective. Yes. Also, "bust" is a term of art that doesn't necessarily have to mean something as atrocious as Jason Bay's last season as a Met.
  24. Diaz was absolutely toxic in 2019. Here's a great line on Diaz's first three years with the Mets from this well-written piece: Like so many shooting-star relievers, Díaz was able to access his former dominance only occasionally. And Lindor's Mets debut? The Mets' Francisco Lindor isn't in a slump. He's in a three-year slide. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/06/01/mets-francisco-lindor-isnt-slump-hes-three-year-slide/https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/06/01/mets-francisco-lindor-isnt-slump-hes-three-year-slide/ He spent much of 2021 barely above the Mendoza Line, single-handedly murdering the Mets offense as he was a permanent fixture of the lineup, batting near the very top of it daily. And his "three year slide" duly noted in The WAPO article linked to above as well as in many other sources, especially local ones, had many Mets fans wondering if they had gotten another George Foster.
  25. =seawolf17 post_id=104389 time=1660790860 user_id=91] Oh for FUCK'S SAKE WHY DOES EVERY THREAD TURN TO BULLSHIT Are we in a fucking pennant race, having a fucking awesome year, or are we going to piddly-dick every fucking comment? This is supposed to be a Mets message board. Fuck. Fine. You win, batmags. You've fucking made everyone miserable.
