  1. OMG! Hearing a MFY fan host on the radio allready calling for Torre's head if they lose tomorrow based on "lethargcy" and wants Sweet Lou or someone to come in an "change the culture" Man, I can only imagine what MFY fans would have said after Mazeroski's HR in 1960!

Tomorrow could be a really, really great day. I just like the fact that you'll start hearing more ARod bashing, despite the fact that the ENTIRE Yankee offense did nothing. Come to think of it, I LOVE the fact that this high powered Yankee offense, considered "The Greatest Lineup EVER!" has now scored 3 runs in the last two games! Loved Morgan's BRM defense for the 72 power outage as being "Well, we weren't The Big Red Machine yet." Sure Joe, keep believing that. Jon Matlack is on line 2 BTW to remind you about the next October BTW, I could have sworn Morgan HATES the Yanks because he's forever defending that 70's Reds teams as the Greatest Of All Time

Johnny Dickshot wrote: I don't see why some fans choose to blame that Game 6 loss on Rogers any more than Franco, who blew a lead; Benitez, who blew a lead; or Lieter, who couldn't get out of the first inning AND made a stupid error. And not sure why a bases-loaded walk is any worse a crime than a leadoff double to Gerald Williams, who could have and would have scored on almost any other outcome too. Sure it was a painful, sucky end to a great game but it was, like most wins and losses, a team thing. I think its a combination of: -Remembrances of his performance as a MFY and -Just need one guy to blame that was definatly not coming back in 2000 The guy was brought in to do what Mike Hampton did the next year, be "The Guy" and since he wasn't going to be coming back Met fans felt just in blaming the loss on him. I agree, its actually worse than the Buckner blame based on the other pitching culprits during that particular game

Johnny Dickshot wrote: I remember 2 things about Scooter-o: Very early in his Met caeer, Valentine put him in the outfield in a game against St. Louis and he made an awful play leading to a loss. Afterward, Valentine took a backhanded shot at Phillips/the organization for giving him players without clearly indicating what they could or couldn't do. The other thing, a year or two later, was his hitting a bases-loaded triple that won the Mets a game. I don;t think they give out Div Series MVPs but would be hard to keep it from Scutaro. He was also a guy you heard WFAN callers complain about letting go while we suffered through Joe McEwing. I think this was during a brief period when Scutaro was leading the league in hitting. Surprised his name never came up this year, especially with the year Woodward had.
  6. Like I said at work today. I do NOT want to see ANY Met game Monday! Next time we are at Shea, had better be Wednesday night!
  7. Farmer Ted wrote: Kenny is close to being somewhat forgiven. For what, Andruw Jones or the camera incident?
  8. Monday at Shea. A cross country flight (after playing Sunday) that I do not want the Mets to have to make! Just take it at their leisure and get ready for Wednesday!
  9. This, and Cards/Pads CLEARLY debunks the "Team that is hotter at the end of the season generally does better than team that has it wrapped up by early September" line of thinking! Well Mets/Dodgers as well, but the Mets did hit the postseason on a 4 game win streak.
  10. Gotta know when to hold em!
  11. Kind of like Vin Scully & Joe Garagiola rooting for the Red Sox in 1986, yet go to Boston and fans said "Ah they were rooting for the METS!"
  12. Man, Topps is definatly going all out with their retro kicks. Funny, they kind of played around with it when they relaunched Bowman in 1990 (or maybe it was 89, IIRC) but then scratched that and pretty much let Bowman be just another high end set loaded with Rookie Cards I guess the success of the Mickey Mantle Archives set really "set the tone" for the whole retro and retired player craze thats been around for about 10 years now. See thats what I mean with Mickey Mantle is the Elvis of baseball!
  13. Valadius wrote: Brad Radke is likely to retire now. I feel old - I think this is the first player with a relatively long career to retire that I remember their rookie season. OUCH! Thanks for making the rest of us feel like Old Timers. Wait till guys you saw their ENTIRE careers start making it into Halls of Fame. (Looking right at YOU BARRY SANDERS! STEVE YOUNG! DAN MARINO!, ECT!)
  14. Johnny Dickshot wrote: The concept of coming up big is, I guess, big, but the concept of not coming up big... let's say, limiting a 95-win team to 4 runs ... is not some kind of awesome failure that assures that one is incapable of big-ness. It's all overblown and unfair, though if it distracts, divides or undermines the MFYs, then I'm cool with it. At this point I think its more wanting a "Magic Moment" we are beyond a 4 for 5 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs, especially when "everyone else is hitting" I think we are now at the point where "coming up big" is now re-defined as the moment everyone will remeber rather than being part of an onslaught or doing something on someoneles "undercard" if you will.
  15. metirish wrote: Has Moose EVER come up big for them in the postseason? Game 7 ALCS 2003 He was pitching in the "Jeter Flip" game
  16. Edgy DC wrote: ="SteveJRogers"]If the Twins come back to win this game and the series, do you cut Billy Beane loose if you are Oakland? That's a pretty out-there question. Of course not. Moot now, but not really. Would have been the 5th time not getting out of the first round, and not being able to close out the series. I'd be getting tired if I was Beane's bosses.
  17. They've been using Celebration since the 1981 season if I'm not mistaken A's win! Old Friend Jay Payton with the final out grab and Oakland is going to the ALCS. BTW, there's one strike against the "Team that earns spot last weekend of the year usually does better than Team that clinched earlier" idea
  18. MFS62 wrote: Jason Tyner as a DH? In a web sports column yesterday, writer Tom Verducci from SI.com wrote something like "Jason Tyner, who has as many major league home runs as I have....." Good line. And true. But, we all know how much stronger the American League teams are. Right? Later "Jason Tyner is gonna be a special ballplayer..."-Suzyn Waldman on Met rookie Tyner, comparing him to Brett Butler. No wonder she wound up in the MFY booth!
  19. If the Twins come back to win this game and the series, do you cut Billy Beane loose if you are Oakland?
  20. He still goes into the Hall as a Brave though, and history will treat him more as a Brave, but this conversation is ridiculous
  21. Ditto. Ehem... WHEN YOUR A MET! YOU'RE A MET ALL THE WAY! From your first game in Flushing 'Till you get traded away...

  23. Edgy DC wrote: ="Yancy Street Gang"]Was? I'd like to hear an answer to this one. Not to speak for Elster, but I think the point is that TV announcers are generally not considered "The Voice..." of the team, and that title is reserved for the radio broadcasters. Hence the apporpriate current "Voice of the Mets" is Howie Rose "Put THAT in your books!" There is more of a connection with radio broadcasters than there are with TV guys. Of course there are exceptions (Ralphie Boy) but generally its the Word Picture Artists who fans (of all sports, not just baseball) have a strong affiliation for as oppossed to the TV guys
  24. metsmarathon wrote: the flip side is that maybe the demand is so great in those other cities that the fans actually keep their merchandise instead of flipping it for a quick buck. Eh, not really. No cache really nationally for anything other than the major markets and the Northeast (Boston, Baltimore, ect) in terms of that sort of stuff.
  25. Nymr83 wrote: a Cubs/White Sox WS would get lower ratings too and a Dodgers/Angels one would be there as well. when you are only drawing one media market instead of two you are bound to have bad ratings. Yeah but you could tell there was a national sense of apathy and loathing on the part of many towards that WS. I mean Time even had someone write a column about how much he couldn't care less about the Series. (which makes some dopey caller even more dopey who thought MLB should make it a baseball hoilday the day the Mets and Yanks had that "Two Stadiums One Day" DH that summer) It says more about how baseball really has become a provincial sport as well. Your city is no longer playing, you don't watch. Its not that way with football Not to have that "baseball is dying" debate again, but baseball really hasn't been the "national game" in quite a long, long, long time
