  1. Mike off Ramiro Mendoza in the Matt Franco Game (ah, the joys of shorthand) was the longest Met home run I ever witnessed in the horsehide flesh. In terms of the bad guys, Pat Burrell went over the visiting bullpen back wall on one bounce in 2001. It was long and it was hard. I could hear it take the bounce off concrete and I was nowhere near it. Dishonorable mention: Andres Galarraga during a dispiriting afternoon of hooky-playing in 1998. Watched it go out from the mezzanine and I could swear I was at eye-level with it.
  2. An overlooked/underrated game in the pantheons of Subway Series and Mike lore. (Except on CPF, naturally, where it gets its due.) Written about in comment form here a few months ago: http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog/_archives/2005/8/4/1109148.html#362105

  4. Frayed Knot wrote: Y'know one thing this means is that any potential Gary Cohen post-season calls are gone. Local TV coverage, unlike their radio counterparts, can't follow the team into post-season when the networks take over. We'll also "lose" him for a handful of the more important reg season games - Met-v-Yanx, etc - that FOX & ESPN will carry. GC just on the FAN with Ego & The Idiot. He acknowledged the post-season dearth is the one drawback. Otherwise (naturally), he was practically giddy. Says he's been assured Snigh will be a legit network not one that "drinks the Kool-Aid" (nice knock on Yeech). Also indicated, as others have, that Snigh won't be Metsographic as a rule but a sports outlet that "gets this market," et al. He said this as if it's a good thing. He's moved on. I haven't. http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog/_archives/2005/11/9/1366304.html
  5. Happy for Gary if this will gain him a higher profile and a bigger payday. But I will miss him terribly from inside my ears. He's been a bigger constant there than wax for seventeen seasons and a whole lot more welcome. Suddenly it matters a great deal if Cablevision and Comcast screw around on distributing Snigh. I had taken the position that even if they pull a YES on us and keep it off our system that that's all right, I've got Gary and Howie. Now it's Howie (presumably) and I don't know who. Won't be the same. Can't possibly be as good. Assuming that the TV cablecasts are eventually available in my home, it won't be the same Garywise either. What your announcers tell you on the radio matters. Haven't felt that way about TV since Tim McCarver was in his salad days. Maybe Gary will re-revolutionize the medium. But pending technology, you don't take cable TV everywhere you go. Radio is ubiquitous in the life of a baseball fan. Gary made it preferable. It's easy to assume your play-by-player is the best because you don't have a lot to which to compare him. But I heard a number of different announcers via XM this summer and Gary beat them all or at least every one whose last name wasn't Scully. I'm happy for Gary. I'm not happy for me. http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog/_archives/2005/10/5/1282724.html
  6. I don't think there was more going on than that good old New Yorker whimsy. I saved that cover. Still have it here somewhere.
  7. Final answers abound... http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog/_archives/2005/11/8/1362508.html

  10. mlbaseballtalk wrote: 28 better not be Jim freaking Fregosi if we are counting WS apperance as a non-player If only Bob Scheffing had used the phrase "better not be Jim freaking Fregosi" around this time of year in 1971... Nope, not Fregosi.
  11. You people are getting good. 44 is Pumpsie Green (nice phrasing, Edgy) The old No. 10 is indeed Frank Lary. I've always been enchanted by the Yankee Killer having been a Met. And for the record, he beat Colt 45 starter Don Larsen in his "last" Met start (at least before he came back the following year). Nice work, Steve. 31 is Aguilera. Even though he'd become a bigger star as a reliever, the Mets never had a bigger win than the game he got credit for. 40 is Jorgensen. The guesses on 19, 20, 28 and 35 are incorrect. Also, at the suggestion of a reader, I've clarified Question No. 29 slightly to avoid the exact confusion I was striving for (it was a little too confusing).
  12. Due to my lack of due diligence, the quiz-taking world is owed a new No. 10 question. http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog/_archives/2005/11/5/1349026.html It has been incorporated into the original and Extra Help versions of the Final. All apologies.
  13. HahnSolo wrote: #34 looks like it has something to do with the band the Go Gos. "We Got the Beat", "Vacation." Now I have a vague recollection of Belinda Carlysle having a relationship with a baseball player, but can't figure out who. Any ideas? ="Edgy DC"]Good call. You're thinking of Mike Marshall. My lips aren't sealed. That's correct. The Mets' short-lived first baseman had a well-publicized romance with the lead singer of the Go-Gos in the early '80s. Mets fans, on the other hand, weren't head over heels for him.
  14. I earlier drove by a sign that instructed me to VOTE FOR WRIGHT. I was tickled until I realized it was a Gerald Wright running for judge in Nassau County. I squinted real hard until it said David.
  15. HahnSolo wrote: I don't know if everybody has given up on this, but I've got another (I think): 43. El Sid, 1993. Correct. Enjoy a pineapple on Sid. Don't give up. Never surrender. It was either Churchill or Corey Hart who said that (though neither of them is a clue).
  16. HahnSolo wrote: Good job on #8 Greg...a lot of those clues could have pointed to Koosman. Including the hint about not wearing a glove in his biggest moments, which I thought referred to Orosco tossing his glove after the NLCS and WS. It's Mickey Lolich (1976), who I had forgotten was traded for Rusty Staub. Correct on No. 8. It is Mickey Lolich.

Great writers steal from them outright. --Sam Seaborn, The West Wing Remember the Big, Stupid Quiz that Mr. Dickshot administered just after the season ended? Well, it is shamelessly aped at Faith and Fear. 24. Hello. My name is Jack DiLauro and I'm an aholic. What kind of aholic? The kind who became addicted to being the forgotten man on one of the most legendary teams of all time. I want to help each and every one of YOU in the audience today forget all that and remember who YOU are. Gimme a Met who has a really fun show on Animal Planet.
