Official Shea Stadium Countdown Tracker Thread

Tonight for 28 in real life: American Heart Association representative. Well, you do gotta have heart... Tonight for 27 in Oughta Be: A remembrance of an architectural feature that used to be a staple of Shea, the revolving door at third base. A nine-man team of third basemen, in fact: Bobby Klaus (53 games at 3B) Joe Moock (12) Jerry Buchek (54) Bob Aspromonte (97) Tim Foli (38) Roy Staiger (142) Sergio Ferrer (14) Phil Mankowski (16) And finally, the man who may have seemed just another in the long line of Met third basemen at the beginning, but he would grow into the first Mets third baseman to claim the position as his own for an extended period of time*, paving the way for later, less roiled circumstances at third. He came up in late 1980, won Rookie of the Year votes in 1981 and was a key member of the Met renaissance of 1984. He left in a swap that benefited both teams but returned in the early '90s as an outfielder. Always loved at Shea Stadium, the third baseman in 516 games as a New York Met, welcome home Hubie Brooks. *They were always trying to replace Wayne Garrett -
="bmfc1"]Cerrone cleverly reasons that the pricing was based on famous Mets years: "i assume the established price is a combination of the numbers 86 and 69, as in 1986 and 1969, the two seasons during which the Mets won a World Seriesvery clever" If the MFYs do that, they'll stick their dopey fans for $2,600. As long as it's not $2,700.

The missus and I were having this conversation the night before we learned of the plan. I said I could see buying one seat for like $350, with $500 the absolute upper limit of what I would spend in total (and I don't really have a discretionary seat fund at my fingertips). When we read the details, I'm like "forget it," but she's like "you'll regret it if you don't," and I'm like, "yeah, but who needs two?" Well, she said, we do. Where we gonna put two seats from Shea Stadium? I asked. Somewhere, she said. I've created a well-meaning monster.

Official Shea Stadium Countdown Tracker Thread

Well, none of them ever sold a Lincoln or a Mercury as far as I know, but on August 5 vs. the Padres, the Countdown Like It Oughta Be reserved number 28 for select participants in the longest game, by innings, ever played at Shea, the 25-inning marathon of September 11-12, 1974: Third base ump Frank Pulli Dave Schneck, who batted eleven times (most of anybody on either team) Bruce Boisclair, who picked that night to make his Major League debut Mets pitcher of record Hank Webb The Cardinal who scored the winning run in the top of the 25th, Bake McBride And the Mets reliever who gave manager Yogi Berra eight shutout innings, Jerry Cram Twenty-five innings played. Fifty players used. Seven hours and four minutes of action. Ten major league records set, including longest night game ever played. Approximately 1,500 fans in attendance when Sonny Siebert struck out John Milner to seal the 4-3 win for the Cardinals. Behind the plate for every ball and strike: umpire Ed Sudol, who officiated the Mets' 23-inning game here in 1964 and the 24-inning game they played in Houston in 1968. And on Channel 9 after the game? Kiner's Korner, of course. -

SCHAEFER PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR JULY 2008
G-Fafif replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
="Benjamin Grimm":2phswboe]="G-Fafif":2phswboe]A request to BG to consider expanding the portfolio for future Schaefer winners to include designs from '67 and '70. Both are personal favorites.[/quote:2phswboe] I'll consider it. I guess I'm inclined to go with the cards I'm most fond of, which are the 1971, 1972, and 1973 sets. I continued buying cards into the 80's before I tired of the whole thing, but to me, the coolest cards are the ones that were issued when I was 8, 9, and 10 years old. Also, it's harder to find photos that go with those earlier years, before action shots were used. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the first year we saw players in action on standard Topps cards was 1971, and I think those were always full-body shots taken from a distance.[/quote:2phswboe] You and I are of the same vintage. 1970 was my first year buying and 1967 was the first set to which I was exposed. It never occurred to me until it was brought up in this thread that your handiwork doesn't simply place new pictures in old designs but is intended to replicate the kinds of photos used. My hat's now doubly off to you. Centerfield Aug 04 2008 04:01 PM ="Benjamin Grimm"] but to me, the coolest cards are the ones that were issued when I was 8, 9, and 10 years old. Interesting. That explains why my favorite cards of all time are 1984 Topps. (9 years old) seawolf17 Aug 04 2008 05:49 PM No, it's 1983 (I was 7). I can smell the bubble gum whenever I see that design. batmagadanleadoff Aug 04 2008 06:23 PM Here's a modern '67 Toppish shot. G-Fafif Aug 04 2008 06:49 PM Well, they both like to bunt. AG/DC Aug 04 2008 07:50 PM Let's talk numbers. I haven't been voting. My life's been complicated, and my voting system was overcomplicated. I'll jump back in this month. But, if I may, how is Fernando merely the seventh best Met in July? Elster88 Aug 04 2008 07:59 PM Looking just at the numbers, Heilman over Wags doesn't make sense either. I haven't been voting enough either. metsmarathon Aug 04 2008 09:56 PM i've been stupid busy for about the past three months at work.. mopst of it ive been nowhere near my computer... i've gotta get back on the voting saddle, and wind up my little friend as well! batmagadanleadoff Aug 05 2008 01:00 AM ="G-Fafif"]Well, they both like to bunt. Yes, and it's a real (ahem) drag when one of those two does so. What I really like about those '67 Topps' is the large canvas; how the photo takes up almost the entire card and doesn't compromise any space for text. They remind me of the great Sporting News covers from the late '60's through the mid 70's, or the classic Sports Illustrated covers before that mag started cluttering up its' covers with so much type, you could hardly see what the hell picture was on the cover anymore. There's a sweet Ozzie Sweet look to some of those cards, too. Benjamin Grimm Aug 05 2008 07:54 AM ="Elster88":1f5bco9q]Looking just at the numbers, Heilman over Wags doesn't make sense either. I haven't been voting enough either.[/quote:1f5bco9q] I think in this case quantity triumphed over quality. Heilman pitched in four games more than Wagner did. He earned points in 12 different games, earning more than 1 point on July 9, 11, and 29. Wagner earned points in 10 games, and the only one in which he earned a full point or more was July 26, when he pitched 2 innings and got no decision. In his one-inning saves, he earned his most points, 0.91, on July 11 and as little as 0.46 on July 23. seawolf17 Aug 05 2008 08:02 AM ="batmagadanleadoff"] You never see those old-school glasses on players any more either. I loved Darrell Porter when I was a kid. Benjamin Grimm Aug 05 2008 08:14 AM ="Benjamin Grimm":3ru11s24]="Elster88":3ru11s24]Looking just at the numbers, Heilman over Wags doesn't make sense either. (Though I would never pass up the opportunity to otherwise mock Franco!). Anybody else catch the MBTN shoutout from Gary? Much dithering over the obscurities and nonentities who besides Kunz wore 44 before he went to The Source, crediting "our friends at Mets By The Numbers Dot Com" for reminding them David Cone, Jason Isringhausen and Lastings Milledge were all in on 44. No mention, however, of my eternal 44, Bob Myrick.

Hard to remember or fathom that this is the same bullpen responsible, in great part, for the ten-game winning streak. Ron Darling says they need somebody with more "panache" than Carlos Muniz to bring in in a pinch. He didn't say anything about verve.
