  1. Add to the dossier, "The Braves don't know rules well."
  2. I wonder if perhaps Piniella remembered Guidry stepping into close when Gossage went out with a Cliff Johnson-broken thumb. Surely all the Ron Davis talk in the air is taking him back to those halcyon days.
  3. Thunder and lightning in the area. Somebody Up There doesn't like Pagan batting eighth.
  4. Cubs OF Xavier Nady received his 2009 World Series ring when New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman surprised him at Citi Field before the game. "It was pretty special," Nady said. I guess Mets management can't be blamed for any aspect of this MFY recognition, save for not kidnapping Cashman and sending Omar to the Bronx in his place. Nice gesture on MFY honcho's part, venue notwithstanding. I recall Gord Ash making a trip to Shea on behalf of the Blue Jays in early 1994 to present Doug Linton with his World Series ring. Linton pitched four games for the '93 Jays and was waived in June. The generosity compared particularly favorably at the time with Frank Cashen's miserliness toward almost every non-postseason Met from '86, when only Foster, Lynch and Berenyi got rings, while Myers, Magadan, Gibbons, et al could suck it for the next decade or however long it took to partially rectify the slights. Nady earned his ring for playing seven MFY games in 2009. His '06 Mets World Series ring got misplaced in a cab in Miami.
  5. I heard he tested positive for an extra consonant in his first name.
  6. In the spirit of it's fun (goddammit) to discuss why we vote as we do, I threw a half-point Bay's way for two very good catches last night: a diving number against Soriano in the fifth when a no-hitter was still in progress and one he tracked down at the wall past the LF foul line off Fukudome, both recording an out and saving Igarashi one more pitch on the potentially bad hammy. I've also been inclined, in Pelfrey's last two excellent starts, to share some of his credit with Blanco as Pelf is quick to do the same. Ignore or embrace these observations as you wish. I'm only in this for the neato BG cards at the end of each month.

  8. Hey, hey, holy mackerel, that's a good KTE. A lot less of the "E" supporters at Citi last night than in past years. Cubs not inspiring those East Coast North Siders as much these days.
  9. I get the impression from your periodic urgings to remember this and not forget that that you think many of your fellow voters are just dopes who are distracted by shiny RBIs and don't get nuance the way you do. So yes, your use of "improve" does imply you've figured it out and we're all idiots.
  10. E, I'm sure you're being passionate and conscientious, per usual, but I don't know what "improve" means other than "vote as I do." And that's the turn-off. No need for another apology; just trust your fellow fan and please soft-pedal the proctoring.
  11. Have faith in your Crane Pool comrades to cast informed ballots even if they reach somewhat varied conclusions. They watch/know the Mets, too.

  13. Nice night to meet our latest savior. Whether this was the beginning of the Ike Davis Era or just the night Ike Davis debuted, a marvelous introduction. Agreed with Gwreck on GMJ. Why he should be the target as opposed to almost everyone else...why ask why? Try Ike Dry. TMF and I sampled McFadden's. Very loud. Even louder than Ike's bat, so you know it's loud.
  14. Edgy DC wrote: When giving out points for the 20 inning marathon, keep in mind that your hitters scored two runs (all off fake pitchers) in 20 innings --- an average of 0.9 per game. The pitchers, on the other hand, managed a 0.45 ERA. Distribute the points accordingly. Or use your own judgment.

  18. If Jake is truly gone, then he becomes the 40th Met to play his final game as a Met in April. However, if Gary Matthews makes it clear to May 1, Matthews is taken off the list and reverts to being the 39th. Jacobs appears (if he doesn't accept Buffalo) to be the sixth Recidivist Met -- or two-timer -- whose second tenure ended in April: Ray Sadecki, Brady Clark and Pete Walker all wore out their second welcome almost as soon as their second chance season began. Marlon Anderson and Tim Foli lasted a year or more before their second stays expired practically in the shadow of Opening Day. I really hope we're talking about him the way he remember the likes of Mike Howard and Mark Bradley vis-a-vis Darryl Strawberry. Man, remember all those first basemen we ran out there before Ike Davis was FINALLY called up?
  19. Gary, Keith and Ron are HD for the ears and the mind. Give yourself an aural and mental treat.
  20. If "first save" had been on the table, I wonder if anybody would have guessed Pelfrey.
  21. 2010: Downstairs cursing out everybody and everything until it worked, as recorded here. 1985: All over the South Shore of Long Island (not far from where I sit, but somehow a quarter-century away), as recalled here. I'm sure it was said pages and pages ago, but Eff LaRussa.
