  1. I got no enjoyment from the MFYs beating the MFPs, and exactly as much from the opposite scenario. They can stop replaying that World Series now.
  2. Wright strikes out in the middle of a rally and we still have two runs. When you're hot, you're hot...in Cleveland or otherwise.
  3. Reyes dived back into second, was checking his hand a bit. Let's get out of Cleveland with nothing worse than a quad contusion.
  4. The reason I bought my first REYES 7 shirt was the clubhouse shop didn't have PHILLIPS 23. Interesting the directions their respective careers took.
  5. You might say all of us together made up Mr. Met. Or was that Tuttle?
  6. Tonight at 7:05, America's newest Every Fifth Day game show sensation, RAD or ICKY. Tune in and find out whether host R.A. Dickey will be more RAD than ICKY as he looks to make a certain Tribe of Clevelanders knuckle under to his charms. I say R.A. Dickey is totally RAD and not all ICKY.
  7. Niese 2.5 Wright 2.5 Pagan 2.5 Davis 1.0 Francoeur 0.5 Bay 0.5 Dessens 0.5
  8. Looked very good in center amid the wind of Opening Day. It was a reasonable shot, more so than Jacobs and Catalanotto. All three will be lumped together in the mind's eye, hopefully, as the guys the Mets got rid of en route to finding the right mix and taking off toward bigger and better things in 2010. Oh sure, everybody remembers 2010, but nobody remembers how many stiffs we had when that blessed season began...
  9. Rays pound Braves 10-4 (good buddy). Mets only a half-game from first and tied in the loss column. Rest assured if they were tied in the win column, that would be emphasized.
  10. Jon Niese to face his childhood team. Let's hope he toys with them.
  11. Wright 3.0 Santana 2.0 Davis 2.0 Reyes 1.5 Cora 1.0 PFeliciano 0.5

  13. Johan feeds his gopher. He can stop doing that now.

As long as we can gauge the last at-bat, I'd say the last at-bat would be fine. One hopes, for old time's sake, the crowd could muster-up a strong 1999-style "SUCKS!" when the lineups are read. And yes, no more Cox in New York. (Why must everything sound like a setup line for Fman?)
  15. Chipper hears the Mets' footsteps, knows it's time to pack it in. No doubt. September 16-18, Braves final series at Citi for the year. Gotta go give Larry his props if this is really it: a standing ovation upon his last at-bat (assuming it's not a game situation as his last at-bat at Shea was), booing and Larry-ing the whole time of course, but definitely acknowledging his one-of-a-kind villain's role. I've spent too much time in our two ballparks letting him know how much he sucks to not let him know it's been an uncommon pleasure rooting against him.

I loved Steve Henderson and was truly fond of Doug Flynn. As Pat Zachry says 33 years later, however, he was the pitcher who was traded for Tom Seaver. Tough bar to clear. Dan Norman...I hear he's learning to switch-hit at Tidewater.

While the concept of Seaver as a Red never, ever sat right, that one swing off Allen Ripley remains transcendent. Not worth Tom Frigging Seaver in a Reds uniform, but 6/14/80 is the least we can have to show for 6/15/77. There's not a lot of most to show for it. My most memorable Hendu Homer was - if I recall all of this correctly without looking it up - a 2-run shot off of Silvio Martinez at Shea in Martinez ML debut in 1979. The homerun was the only hit the Mets had that game as Silvio spun the complete game 1-hitter. I will now go to UMDB to see if I'm right... 1978, Memorial Day doubleheader. Mets were 23-24 entering the nightcap. Never got anywhere near .500 after Silvio (mother...).

By 1989, July 31 was the deadline. Not sure when that changed. New basic agreement went into effect after the '85 season, though not sure if that was a factor.

  20. There was lots of happy horsespit in March about how tough the A.L. East would be this year, including all that fine young talent in Baltimore. The implication there would be a tangible step forward. Either everybody just like the storyline of the division so awesome that every team was dangerous or nobody examined the O's for ripeness or rot.
