  2. Son of Tim Leary chimes in on UMDB: OK. I now officially hate Joe Torre. All I knew about my dad's first game was that it was 15 degrees outside. Stuck out 3 batters in 2 innings then WHAM! He never pitched at his full potential after his injury in what was his first MLB game. I had no idea what he missed out. Things makes more sense now. Thanks to all the people that left comments for my dad.

  5. Ike Davis is a one of a kind Met, a one of a kind player, a one of a kind human being. They made an Ike Davis mold only to break it when he emerged a fully formed cleanup hitter.
  6. How is it a player named Junior Ortiz is older than all these other Ortizes?
  7. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Reports are that Bobby V has withdrawn his interest in the Orioles job. This from Heyman, a few days ago. Ex-Mets managers of all vintage are in rumored favor in Baltimore. In contrast to their roster of mostly underachieving kids, the Orioles have assembled a list of experienced, accomplished managers as prime candidates to replace the recently fired Dave Trembley for what might be the hardest job in sports, what one baseball executive called a "hell". Internally, even Davey Johnson has been mentioned along with other fellow ex-managers Bobby Valentine, Buck Showalter, Bob Melvin and Eric Wedge. Johnson, who took the Orioles to the playoffs in 1996 and '97 but hasn't managed in the majors since 2000, is surely the most intriguing new name of the group. But Melvin, who managed the Diamondbacks, Showalter (Yankees, D-backs and Rangers), and Wedge (Indians) are all more likely to accept an offer. Melvin is said to have a positive connection to Orioles owner Peter Angelos from Melvin's playing days in Baltimore from 1989-91. Johnson and the more sought-after Valentine, who managed the Rangers and Mets before going on to a successful stint in Japan, would seem to be long shots to join the Orioles. No chance in hell on Johnson, I assume, given his history with Angelos, his long time out of big league dugouts and the fact that he's not an easily harassed hack. But when I first heard it, I shuddered for the simple reason I don't want him to miss his induction into our Hall of Fame on August 1. But if Jack McKeon could resurface twice in his latter years, guiding the Reds to a one-game playoff and the Marlins to a world championship, I suppose it's not out of the question that Davey's ML career might have another go. I take it the Orioles have been impressed with Mets managers dating back to the one who masterminded their defeat in October 1969.
  8. Gonzalez was a dismal manager. The Marlins should have been taking a big step forward this year and Fredi was no help whatsoever motivationally (losing Hanley, though he seems to want to be lost) or strategically. Recall the way he managed against the Mets on the final Sunday of our last series with them, plucking Nolasco with a four-run lead in the sixth and 82 pitches pitched and playing for a DP in the eighth with the go-ahead run on third and nobody out. Gonzalez got his double play and the Mets got their winning run. Other than the owner's capriciousness, I never understood why Girardi was fired down there. He's the one who did the sensational job with an undermanned team in 2006. He was MFY mgr in waiting, I suppose, but he should have been given a chance in Florida to continue what he started. They would have taken more games seriously than just the final game at Shea every year. Wow, I hate the Marlins.
  9. I congratulate Gwreck for having the wherewithal to utter anything more than heavy panting. Mrs. Fafif and I were in Excelsior/Caesars (so imperial!) when Tom was introduced to the crowd alongside the Veteran of the Game, a fellow Marine (Returning Vet being one of the really great things the Mets do throughout the season). We had a nice overhead view of the Franchise and were able to follow him visually out of the stands and into whatever tunnel Tom Seaver uses (a Terrific tunnel, no doubt). He's totally got his politician hat on in those situations, with his now familiar wave and point at the crowd, stopping to slap or shake a hand or two, but always hustling the hell out of there. I wasn't anywhere near him and my breath was still taken away. In an elevator, not even in retrospect, could have I said anything coherent let alone witty to him. I'd probably still be in the elevator right now. (I'd also be at a loss for words with Pinman, though probably for different reasons.)

  13. This thread has been quite a conspiracy.
  14. Lookalikes, sort of, 32 years apart: Pat Zachry in the 1978 highlight film (just shown by SNY) and R.A. Dickey these days. Tell R.A. to not kick the dugout steps (or give up a record-tying hit to Pete Rose)
  15. And yet the Fine Young Cannibals never had a hit within this genre. They may have missed out on a good thing.

  17. The presence of a pitcher I had come to think of as "My Mejia" had done wonders for reviving the humming of around here. Looking forward to the return of the kid when he comes a long, long way.
  18. It's linked above, but worth mentioning twice: MGIM's trip to the site of Tiger Stadium is a beautiful read. So read it.

  20. Perhaps the Tigers should save Detroit more grief and just forfeit in advance since it's obvious they have zero chance. Goodness knows this KTE beats whatever the guy on the Lull Itch Forum wrote about the Mets. FYI, Niese is still eligible for ROY because of the injury in 2009 and not enough combined innings between '08 and '09. But add him to the list of outstanding Met freshmen to be screwed by Braves and Nats.

  22. Holy Tim Foli! Monday night (off night) at 6:30 it's Mets Yearbook: 1978.
  23. Adding to a list I didn't suspect would need updating for a while: 12-1 from June 4 to June 18, 2010, encompassing a 5-1 homestand. The Mets should feel free to use the current 8-1 run as a jumping-off point for bigger and better things.
