  1. Somebody gave him an eighth-place vote, anyway. Joey Votto won the award going away.

  3. For Melvin I was ready to drink the Kool-Aid. For this guy, it's Coll-Aid. And boy is it well-prepared!
  4. Duaner Sanchez was a New Jersey Jackal this past summer. As was some really unpleasant person from Passaic, no doubt, but Sanchez wore a uniform to that effect.
  5. Danny the Rational (Sometimes) Mets Fan phones the Mets to inform them they can expect one fewer renewal if Bob Melvin is named manager. This guy has a track record of sincerity on such matters, so I would expect him to follow through.
  6. Harold Reynolds, whom I've come to enjoy on MLBN, sounded Chassian regarding the AL Cy. Something about Sabathia and Price have to pitch in the A.L. East, which should count for something (never mind that Hernandez had to pitch in the same division with the eventual league champions), and because the Mariners weren't in a race, he got to pitch for himself/his statistics as opposed to having to pitch for his team. Which means what exactly? Instead of trying to get batters out, he tried to...get batters out selfishly? I admit there's something that feels a little off about a 13-game winner -- as archaic and useless as the pitcher's "win" is -- winning the Cy Young in a year when two very good pitchers won 21 and 19 games, but the Republic of Baseball won't crumble. It may even be a little more secure in its foundation when award for pitching the best went to somebody judged to have pitched the best. Chass, obviously, is a Chasshole.
  7. My buddies were mocking me for filling my top 60 list with Mets, so I had to pause the countdown and include these non-Mets of note: You handled it with aplomb, but your buddies have no soul.
  8. Jeff Francoeur is saving on dog-walking fees since his deadline trade from New York where, per his oft-aired radio commercials, his expenses piled up (dog-walking, T-Mobile, tipping Charlie Samuels 50 large).
  9. Many teams have done this for St. Patrick's Day. They don't want any trouble from Big Irish.

  11. Not pictured: Proud Flushingites sporting home team gear; local merchants' windows featuring signs saluting the five-time world champion New York Mets.
  12. HahnSolo wrote: Look at that great head of hair on Andy Messersmith! Imagine what that will get on the open market.
  13. Joe Morgan was from the days of W-L, I would expect nothing less (from someone whose mind appears as closed as Carlton's mouth). Hitting leaders would have unquestionably been average.
  14. The Second Spitter wrote: It's a shame they didn't covert Shea into apartments. At last an endorsement for this proposal! To be fair, apartments was my alternative proposal. My big idea was keep Shea in addition to Citi for double home field advantage. I stand by my insane romanticism.
  15. Indicative of what "pitching leaders" instinctively meant in 1972 versus now (Fergie as first guy was the dead giveaway if there was confusion, if one could transport oneself back 38 years to prove it). Today if we saw a card with that header, we'd expect WHIP or ERA+ on the back.
  16. Mike Puma (definitely a porn name) What Mike Puma wears on set:
  17. HahnSolo wrote: I assume wins, but don't know. But those cards did get my anger riled up about Seaver not getting the Cy in 1971. Additionally, that pic of Carlton on the Pitching Leaders card is the exact same pic as his regular 1971 card. Come on, Topps! Last time Carlton opened his mouth for 15 years.
  18. I guess they mostly remember him as a Red.
  19. One pumpkin at a time...
  20. More MGIM gold. I am a little worried, however, that Krane's cap-tipping is going to distract Hickman from that fly ball.
  21. metsguyinmichigan wrote: And this is not a national holiday WHY? Congrats - and thank you! -- Mr. Seaver! Please ask everyone you see what their plans are for Tom Seaver's birthday. It's the only way we'll get critical mass rolling.
  22. ...happy birthday to you! Tom turns 66 today, yet is forever 41. A numerical salute of sorts (cap tip MBTN) here.
  23. I didn't necessarily love the trades, but I sure liked the traded cards. 1972 Fregosi (big help, here. 1976 Lolich (recalled in the midst of Johan fever, Feburary 2008) here. Traded was like In Action for the offseason, except way after the fact and with airbrushing run amok.
  24. seawolf17 wrote: Those both kick ass. In a more perfect Citi Field, there's a Casey on a bench statue greeting all comers in just that pose. Pacella one, too, just to be cheeky about it. A recent favorite from the Topps Heritage set of 2007 here, back when my scanner worked. The Jose hamstring scare that inspired its scanning, incidentally, was a false alarm.
  25. I'd be down with vanity plate BOWASTFU.
