  1. Given that the Mets are in Detroit, just want to clarify this is not a thread about the struggles of the American auto industry.
  2. A man who sounds suspiciously like Omar Minaya is on with Francesa right now. Sounds much older. Can't tell if he sounds any wiser.
  3. Gary's real-life Rudy efforts continue. Gary Carter is at the midway point of radiation treatments for cancerous brain tumors. He also has been dealing with walking pneumonia, his daughter Kimmy Bloemers wrote in the family's online journal. Carter watched the movie "Rudy" last weekend, which the family found inspiring. Wrote Bloemers: Team Carter is definitely NOT giving up. Brain cancer is the big problem but there have been many other bumps in the road for our family. Although it is not easy, we are doing all we can to stay positive and stay strong. We definitely have our sad, confusing and frustrated moments but we are giving our burdens, worries and sadness to the Lord and asking Him to take them away. We know NOTHING absolutely NOTHING is impossible for our God and wee are trusting in our Savior! We are praying for a miracle and we are praying BIG! Dad will get another MRI in August to see the activity in his brain. We pray for NO tumors and NO cancer!
  4. Detroit: Five minutes ahead of the curve.
  5. I still miss Joe Orsulak.
  6. The last White Sock to beat the Mets was Rocky Biddle. And once you've been beaten by Rocky Biddle, maybe there's just no reason to ever play his team again.
  7. When I saw Davey Johnson's team lost last night, my reflex reaction was "damn," until I remembered who Davey Johnson's team was. Kind of like Piazza's first game at Shea as a Padre. He got on and I instinctively urged the next batter, Adrian Gonzalez, to bring him home...until I remembered Adrian Gonzalez wasn't a Met. Still, I wish Davey well. I know he was wondering what I wished him.
  8. I'm surprised Jeter wasn't Verducci's MVP, since you can't begin to put a cap on Jeter's value; Jeter wasn't Verducci's Cy Young, since Jeter saves each of his pitchers two earned runs per game just by his calming influence; Jeter wasn't Verducci's Rookie of the Year, since Jeter is forever young if preternaturally wise; and Jeter wasn't Verducci's Manager of the Year, since nobody manages the demands of immortality better. Or maybe he was still gagging on that spoonful of cinnamon.

  12. Come on over and read about three Mets teams on uncommon rolls: 073 -- 1990: Darryl Strawberry reaches new heights 074 -- 1986: Ray Knight upstages the Grucci Brothers 075 -- 1997: Carlos Baerga is eighth-inning thunder, ninth-inning lightning Also... 073 -- 1997: No starting pitcher, but lots of Carl Everett 074 -- 1963: Harkness on the edge of town 075 -- 1989: Pitching and three-run homers, both from Ron Darling
  13. Mrs. Fafif: "Oh, the Tides!" Me: "They're not the Mets' farm club anymore." Mrs. Fafif: "They're not?" Me: "Not since 2006." Mrs. Fafif: "Who is?" So much for rampant Bisonmania.
  14. 1-0 over and over and over. (I'm too skittish to think in larger segments.)
  15. Lance Johnson holds the Mets record for base hits in a season, with 227 in 1996. Let's track Jose Reyes's challenge. METS HITS IN A SEASON Through 78 NYM Games REYES 2011: 113 Johnson 1996: 105 And Reyes had those two days off due to his grandmother. He's one behind Adrian Gonzalez for the major league lead in hits. like 20 points off his AVG lead though, but Gonzo has 40 more points of BABIP too. Reyes missed three games, actually. At this stage of 1996, Johnson had played all 78 team games, or three more than Jose.
  16. metirish wrote: I don't get retaliation in baseball, no one ever seems satisfied with any outcome. This and the recent endless retaliation talk in the media regarding Ortiz is laughable. Jeff is laughable too. If the Mets are on the receiving end of retaliation, it's wrong. If the Mets are on the delivering end of retaliation, it's honorable. Jeff is more laughable than Mr. Met. We laugh with Mr. Met.

  19. METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS Through 6/26/2011 1. Ed Kranepool 1,418 2. JOSE REYES 1,232 3. Cleon Jones 1,188 4. DAVID WRIGHT 1,182 Jose leads David by 50 hits. He trailed him when David went on the DL.
  20. Nymr83 wrote: I've never even heard of Kelvin Chapman, whats the significance? Kelvin Chapman, Mets Opening Day Second Baseman as a 22-year-old, 1979; washed out, fought his way back from the minors to become Wally Backman's platoon partner in 1984 (successfully) and 1985 (less so). Wore No. 10 his first time with the Mets, which is the number on the jersey themetfairy describes, thus Howie Rose taking notice. So there's your significance.

  23. At least that's what Waco's most trusted Dr would prescribe.
  24. Hot day. Get Jon some AC. Maybe some Dr Pepper.
