  1. Southern Hospitality is terrific. Strawberry's was named for a Met. Somehow that should have meshed into something transcendent.
  2. Full answers here.
  3. Jeter's ankle fractured, out for rest of postseason. Most devastating MFY injury since Rivera went out and MFYs had to settle for division title, best record in league. Or maybe since Babe Ruth contracted the clap and they went on a forty-year dynastic run.
  4. Buster Posey very valuable. Grand slam, 6-0.
  5. Alex Cora DFA'd?
  6. Memories of Joaquin Arias ended rather abruptly, with Ceetar never following through on a tease about his shot on Beer Money.
  7. Chris Berman oozed praise all over ex-Met Joaquin Arias late in last night's game, going so far as to insist he was awarding him the unsponsored "making the most of your opportunity" prize on him -- and then giving player of the game to Angel. Good to know some 2010 Mets are keeping busy these days.
  8. This A's team is the epitome of that scene in Major League in which it is asked of the Indians, "Who're these fuckin' guys?" Fun bunch in the ninth last night, I tell you what.
  9. Indeed, it wasn't a sprint, but a marathon -- and metsmarathon claimed the second DVD. The ten players were those who got the first hit ever against the Mets in regular-season play for each of the franchises (under their current guise) who are/were in the 2012 postseason. Marathon and another reader figured that out and then identified which player did the deed for each team. Quiz inspired, in part, by Swan's "Mets Firsts" challenge the other day.
  10. Nats fans (all of whom, based on every feature story I've read, are related to Walter Johnson), taking it in stride. If you didnt know any better, youd assume this was New York. Or Philadelphia. Maybe Detroit. The kind of city where baseball fans are accustomed to postseason games, and sometimes seeing the home team get raked in said games, and subsequently heading home in an early, desultory huff, the better to vent and wail on sports talk radio. Thing is, nobody here seemed particularly perturbed. Not in the overstuffed silver subway cars. Not in the upper-deck seats above left field, where Nationals fans Hank Thomas and Mike Grieb sat directly behind the Plexiglas safety shield, watching the on-field shellacking and off-site exodus with a mix of mild denial and rapid acceptance, long-jumping from stage one to stage five on the Kubler-Ross scale of grief. Tomorrow is another day, Thomas said with a shrug. Get perturbed, people. You're on the brink.
  11. Good lord, Opponent is annoying.
  12. One DVD won, one still available...
  13. "You going to Wright's first game back?" Not a question that could be asked by or of a Mets fan in a sane world.
  14. Ceetar wrote: Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon winning like 18 of 20 games they pitched in..2007? 2005 -- also when they pulled washed-up Marlin Al Leiter off the scrap heap and drained useful innings out of him.
  15. Bold-faced clues added.

  17. That was an incredibly good piece by a gifted writer. Love when Deadspin runs something like that instead of what Deadspin usually runs.
  18. Tackle this quiz at Faith and Fear in Flushing, win a valuable prize: The 50 Greatest Mets DVD, chock full o' bonus material.
  19. Benny Agbayani.

    FAN to FM

Clarification: It's a simulcast until further notice, starting in November. WFAN-AM and WFAN-FM.

I was in Paris in early July and had just come back to the hotel after attending one of the greatest concerts I'd ever seen. It was a long show, ending past midnight (Paris time), and after post-show drinks and food I was still wired, so naturally, I put on the Mets game (it was about 4:00 AM at this point) -- just in time for the Mets' rally in the ninth against Jonathan Papelbon. Murphy beat out the infield single for the tie, and then Wright got the winning hit, and I was able to experience it through the magic of the internet, gameday audio and the dulcet tones of Howie Rose. Perfect. That game was the moment I finally allowed myself to believe the 2012 Mets were for real. The next night they came close to forging an even more unbelievable comeback, falling just short against the Cubs. When they didn't, I got the sense the realness had passed. And so it did.
  22. Newsday still has the requirement but the mobile site doesn't. You can read that for free.
  23. Charley Smith ingrained in my head as a onetime Mets slugger because in 1990 when Equitable was underwriting Old Timers Day, the Mets held one with the theme of Mets Third Basemen (which is a great forgotten topic of angst in the Wright Era). The Old Timers Game pitted Mets 3B vs. Mets Opponents and Howie Rose was aghast that Smith was assigned to the opponents given his holding the third base HR record for a single season pre-HoJo. Forty-four years of listening to this stuff, some of it is bound to stick.
  24. The No-No DVD, available for about $14.95 (at most), is worth the price not just for the SNY telecast but the WFAN audio track AND the Spanish-language call that, while hard for someone with six years of junior high/high school Spanish to understand, was about as energetic as could be. Sounded like a 1962 broadcast in the best sense of the atmospherics. Gary joining Howie on Mets Extra that night (the upside of Josh being absent for his daughter's HS graduation was the original host being on air) was magic within magic.

I don't want, say, some Cleveland radio station to say "this guy's amazing; give him whatever he wants to come here." I used to feel that way about Lindsey Nelson doing Notre Dame games. Not exactly the same, but I always waited for Lindsey to cut the charade and starting talking Mets baseball. To a lesser extent, I wanted Murph to change the subject to the Mets during Bowling For Dollars. But, really, it's not like there was a subject during Bowling For Dolalrs.
