  1. No trade yet, also no uniform in Familia's locker. He's still on roster but won't be available. Mets have a mystery pitcher ready to step in should a deal be consummated by gametime, but Callaway, who is on top of everything in this organization, says that isn't likely.
  2. Yo won't be in the lineup today.
  3. The Wilpons' malfeasance in the realm of players playing through injuries is often attributed to a desire to sell tickets. Is anybody (and by "anybody," I mean a critical mass of potential customers) moved by the notion of seeing one particular home team player in this day and age, especially when the player is old news? Perhaps when there's a shot of adrenaline from a superstar being novel and fresh there's a rush on the gate, but is anybody really suddenly going to be, "Gotta go to Citi Field to watch Yoenis Cespedes in his fourth season as a Met?" Same for any marquee personality in recent years once the shine wears off; as great as they were, after a while the likes of Piazza, Martinez and Santana, to name three larger than life acquisitions, were just players on the downside of their respective careers. If Cespedes was theoretically contributing to a legitimate pennant run, sure, but then you're talking about coming to see the team, not a unicorn.
  4. Stephen Colbert livens up the pace of play at Citi Field, July 20, 2018 (segment taped June 8). Mets featured: Todd Frazier, Jerry Blevins, Kevin Plawecki, Seth Lugo, Noah Syndergaard. SrDn3AdBTSQ The night before, Cousin Sal appears in a Mets cap on Jimmy Kimmel Live while commiserating with the host over the state of the 2018 Mets.
  5. Nimmo RF Cespedes (yay) DH (yeech) Cabrera 2B Flores 1B Conforto LF Bautista 3B Mesoraco C Rosario SS den Dekker CF Thor shall pitch.
  6. Yo indeed back, with Dom goin' down. But don't fear a lack of Smith, for Drew has returned. Leaving us, for now, is Corey Oswalt, making rotation room for the infinitely worse-performing (but better-compensated) Jason Vargas.
  7. Scott Soshnick of Bloomberg reporting at least 10% of the Mets is up for sale, with Comcast and Charter Communications among current minority stakeholders putting their shares in play.

  10. No closer. Let situational anarchy reign.
  11. Yo-Yo'ing back to the roster by 7:05 Friday night, according to all informed speculation: Yo! Yo'ing in the other direction: Dom Smith, it is guessed. But we shall see.
  12. In the 2017 film Lost Cat Corona, METS VS CARDINALS appears on the marquee as a viewing choice outside the Mexican restaurant Tortilleria Nixtamal in Corona. Appearing in a non-speaking role: Mookie Wilson as a priest.
  13. Even the relentlessly lousy first-half Mets teams tend to ebb and flow before the second half is complete. I would expect we've bottomed out, but likely won't execute a face-saving turnaround. I anticipate a 30-38 "second half" for the first 69-93 final record in Mets history. (At the 81-game mark, I examined first- and second-half Met performances, and spotlighted a few examples of teams that looked hopelessly lost finding themselves, along with the less cheery opposite. Kill All-Star break time reading it here.) Position player who will lift our spirits most: A rising Rosario. Pitcher who will give us somebody to root for: An untraded Cy DeGrom.
  14. Players Association director, ex-Met and apparent traitor to civilized behavior Tony Clark greasing the skids for the DH to...I can't even say it.
  15. The shift does suck when it's deployed relentlessly and successfully against the Mets. On Saturday, when Cabrera poked a ground ball past where a third baseman might have been stationed, I said to my companion that the hair just went up on the arms of a million middle-aged men delighted to see the shift beaten.
  16. His player development critique doesn't sound unfamiliar. And I don't know what he would say about hypothetical scenarios. I found his feed last week and scrolled back some. Didn't strike me as overly aggrieved or hopelessly myopic.
  17. All-time Citi Field home run leaders at the break (regular season; as Mets), 2018: Duda 71 Wright 50 Granderson 38 Flores 37 Conforto 31 Cabrera 30 Davis 30 Cespedes 28 Murphy 27 Reyes 25 d’Arnaud 22 Pagan 15 Bruce 14 Walker 14 Beltran 14 Hairston 13 Nimmo 11 Nieuwenhuis 11 Bay 10 Francoeur 9 Lagares 8 Other current Mets: Plawecki 6 T. Rivera 6 Frazier 5 Bautista 4 Smith 4 Rosario 3 Mesoraco 2 Lugo 1 deGrom 1 Syndergaard 1
  18. This is how MLB treats families of the fallen on Memorial Day. @Mets players wore memorial bracelets. AFTERWARDS, MLB wanted the families we worked with to sign insulting forms that referred to them as "Licensees" who received "valuable consideration." I refused to even ask. This need to signal patriotism loudly but only superficially is why we have @MLB turning baseball games into “patriotic” orgies, while telling veterans they won’t hire them because their guard/reserve duty is a problem. Except when a senior official from @MLB Commissioner’s office calls and says, “Hey Ken [Rosenthal], we could really use a puff piece on our Memorial Day program and the charitable donations. People are asking some tough questions.” Then his job is: “Yes sir, right away.” [...]if @MLB found a way to sell the 9/11 caps and make money off of them, they would do it in a second. Francona's feed, when it addresses issues like those referenced above, strikes me more as truth spoken to power from a specific perspective than demanding special reverence for one segment of the population over all others.

  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: DeGrom and his agent really have no leverage, but the Mets should say that they'd be happy to negotiate with Jacob during the offseason. And then they should do their best to sign him. They have the leverage of "sign us or we walk in two years and you've got a draft pick to look forward to." Saying it out loud two weeks before the deadline raises both the immediacy and the stakes. Perhaps strides can be made toward working something out in the offseason, though that might not satisfy the pitcher, who will be operating with a chip on his shoulder in a Mets uniform. And "partnership" doesn't seem like a benign word to throw around.
  22. I'm a Mets fan who sometimes goes to the Mets' ballpark to watch the Mets game, toward the end of which I find myself hoping none of the Mets' relievers blows it.
