I had never heard of Gabbo until a moment ago, and now, suddenly, I'm seeing his (?) name everywhere.

My inclination, and according to the poll results I'm very much in the minority here, is to list Beltran as the 22nd manager, with a lifetime record of zero and zero. I'm not sure yet how I'll do it, and it's not really my number one priority in life, but that's what I think I'll do. Although he'll never manage a game from the dugout, he's been doing the off-season duties of a manager for 77 days, and for those 77 days he's been referred to as "Mets manager". It's really not quite the same as calling Michael Wacha a "Mets pitcher" which won't be true until and unless he pitches in a regulation game.

That's also the argument for Eduardo Perez. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned to whoever their second choice was back in the fall, if he's still available (and interested).

Since I somehow have found myself as an unofficial recorder of Mets history, I have to decide whether Carlos Beltran should be regarded as one of the managers of the Mets. I think I know which way I'm leaning, but I feel like starting a poll that has nothing to do with voting on newspaper covers.

Eduardo Perez. That's my guess.

We are in the fifth year of the Tabloid Cover Derby, and all five times the Daily News has placed two or more covers in the Final Four. He's in danger of being Wally Backmanned. So... if he gets fired before the season starts, does he retain his position as the 22nd Mets manager, with the new guy being number 23, or is it like it never happened, and the new guy will be 22? I know someone who maintains a Mets database, and he may have to make some kind of determination regarding how to record this.

I have to wonder what kind of impact this may have on Beltran's Hall-of-Fame chances.

As of this morning, the Daily News cover MANE MAN, featuring Noah Syndergaard, is our first entry in this year's Final Four. We'll round out the next of the Four over the next three days. Voting for our two semi-final faceoffs will begin either Sunday or Monday morning. We don't know the matchups yet, but we do know that one will be Newsday vs. Newsday and the other will be Daily News vs. Daily News.
