  1. How about "Crazy Eddie"?
  2. Did he have to clear that with the Lou Gehrig family?
  3. If the Mets moved away I'd be done. It would be the end of my days as a baseball fan. No way would I pick up on another team. My interest in the wins and losses of the 25 guys who wear the Mets uniform is irrational and a holdover from my childhood that I haven't let go of. I'd have absolutely no interest, at my age, in starting over with another team. I couldn't convince myself to care.
  4. And his name is kind of like a sentence.
  5. I'd love to see him shuffle off to Buffalo and put pressure on Castillo from below.
  6. Wow. He's horrendously overpaid, but they're going to have to eat that contract anyway. Is there no hope of him having a bounceback year? Someone will be able to pick him up for minimum wage, and they may get a hell of a bargain at the Dodgers expense.
  7. Nope, I'm wrong: That's his 1971 card, and it doesn't look at all familiar to me. And I know I had a few 1971 manager cards, including Gil Hodges.
  8. He was the first "manager" baseball card I ever had. At least, I think so. I recall having his 1971 card, but all I could find online was his 1972:
  9. I consider the off-season as having started on September 28, so we're well past the half-way mark.
  10. I've never been concerned with that.
  11. Is that Andy Warhol's corpse behind him?
  12. I think it stopped in 1986, at least in New York. The fans rushed the field after the division clincher, but the mounted cops prevented it in the World Series. I think, though, that the Phillies had the cops on horseback for the 1980 World Series.
  13. I hope, for their sakes, that they're not printing up too many t-shirts and mugs with that logo on it. It's the New Coke of baseball logos.
  14. I saw that and Harper immediately backpedaled, saying that scouts love Holt and maybe it would be a bad trade, but at least it's something to talk about. How inane, proposing a trade and then immediately saying it's no good.
  15. ]"we understand that and appreciate the passion of Mets fans. Or, it's good that everyone hates this patch! It shows that they care!
  16. And here it is: http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/1600/f1_t1641.shtml

This link no longer works -- does that mean that thread no longer exists or is it just hiding some place under a different address? I wanted to see if I could find the that original post but it's either gone or stupid me can't find it. That link points to our old address and is WAYYY out of date. The thread should exist somewhere in our archives.
  18. I'll guess that no such article will be written.
  19. ]You don't monitor voters. You debate them. Our elected legislators vote on our behalf. And we do (or should) monitor their votes. And while we can and do debate them, we also can vote them out (or, take away their vote) if we don't feel they're voting properly. In my example, that could me wisely, correctly, or any number of things. But in the case of Hall of Fame voters, they should be qualified; they should have a strong knowledge of what they're doing and a consistent approach. Should there be no standard at all for Hall of Fame voters? It's not akin to the public voting in a democracy, I wouldn't say.
  20. I just did a Google news search on Peavy, and the gist I'm getting is that the Cubs may make an attempt to acquire him, but it's possible that the Padres new ownership might be more inclined to keep Peavy than the previous owners were.
  21. He is. What kind of players are the Padres looking for in return? I don't remember who was involved in the failed deal with the Braves and the Cubs, other than DeRosa.
  22. When I read "can't hit" I was thinking Cora was another Anderson Hernandez, at least the version who played for the Mets. But he hit .270 last year, had as many as 10 homers (back in 2004, but none last year) Had 8 doubles and 2 triples in only 152 at bats in 2008, which is like 24 and 6 over a full season. Doesn't walk a whole lot. I mean, he's not the kind of guy we'd want starting 150 games, but for the role he'll be filling he seems decent enough. If he has to bat as a pinch-hitter or because of a double switch, he at least won't be hopeless at the plate. $2 million for him seems a bit high, but I don't see this as a bad move.
  23. It really doesn't matter a whole lot to me, but there would appear to be hope of some kind of a change. The revulsion has been pretty wide-spread, and since the real point of the logo is to move merchandise, then I would think the Mets would have to weigh that very few people will be buying t-shirts, mugs, caps, and beach towels with the boring ugly logo. I don't know whether or not it's too late to make a change. I know that anything that appears on the uniform has to be approved by MLB, and they may have missed a deadline for a new sleeve patch, but maybe they can call an emergency meeting or something.
  24. I was trying to propose a scenario where they wouldn't need to dump Castillo first. It may not be all that plausible a scenario, but it was the best I could come up with.
  25. I too would like to see them turn their attention to Hudson. Maybe they can get him to agree to a bit of a back-loaded contract, which could lessen the sting of paying both him and Castillo too much money over the next couple of years. Presumably, Castillo will be easier to dump as the remaining years on his contract diminish.
