I had a feeling JdG was going to chop the locks sooner rather than later.
He had mentioned a while back that they sometimes bothered him when he pitched but felt somewhat tied to the image since that's how he looked when he first broke through as a pitcher.
But after this year's team, even if not personal, disaster of a season, he probably figured that this was as good a time as any.

Perhaps he didn't want people to confuse him with Gsellman and McGowan.
