Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 I long ago gave up giving a shit about what Straw thinks or says.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Darryl gave a friendly interview the night before to Warner Wolf, filling in on WOR.http://710wor.iheart.com/featured/the-wor-sports-zone-with-pete-mccarthy/content/2017-09-11-darryl-strawberry-with-warner-wolf/Maybe if he'd been asked, he would have ripped the Mets there, too, but he was serious about addiction and otherwise affable about baseball. His answer regarding the Dar-ryl! taunting, that he'd hit a couple of long home runs and his detractors would sit down and be quiet, reminded me how much I loved him in his prime.Darryl will never win the most consistent answer guy award. I've heard and read him say how he never should have left, how he'll always be a Met...I wish him peace.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 I think just about any of the old Mets can play the "Organization hates the 86ers" tune if you bait them into it just so. It's just such a perfect populist message, it's hard to resist giving it to Met-hating Mets fans if you want to win their valentines.Darryl doesn't even play it the way he's supposed to. Remembering that the Wilpons have actually been mostly good to him, he lays the blame at the feet of the Alderson administration, forgetting that he's been welcome back with laurels as recently as last year. The alleged insult to Ray Knight was only offering him a two-year deal, which of course was the decision of Darryl's late fellow inductee, Frank Cashen. This turned out to be more than generous, as the Mets had four eligible replacements behind Ray, and easily more than Knight would get on the open market. To still talk about this like it's a current issue suggests the guy has long since checked out of Mets affairs, which is fine, because he has his own life with it's own meaning. But folks who still want to grind old axes are going to look to old ballplayers to help validate them.WtF are Bernie and Sid? Why do they get a show while my voice goes unheard?
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Strawberry just has a natural tendency toward hurting the ones he loves. You kinda hafta acknowledge and ignore it at the same time. Also the Mets have a lousy grip on history because it just doesn't seem important to the leadership, that's true. But ignoring or dissing the 86ers is absurd in the context of all the shit they don't recall. At one time or another they employed:BackmanHernandezJohnsonCarterTuefelOjedaMazzilliNiemannWilsonLynchand I may be forgetting 1 or 2 others. There was only 24 guys on the roster then!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Straw has been a spring training instructor. Maybe Gooden too. George Foster (Foster!) has been invited to some official events including gladhanding fans on line in the winter for tickets-now-on-sale day. Gooden has also been guest commentator on broadcasts and presumably that involved some renumeration.

Guest cooby Guests Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 . Had a big long pro strawberry post but it disintegrated
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Straw was a cool Facebook presence for a little while a few years back, interacting frankly with fans, until his wife let him know how many marriages are broken up by social media. Straw, fearing how quickly a mis-step could spiral into a disaster, initially pulled back, and then, I think, deleted his accounts. In those interactions, whenever asked the "Mets or Yankees" question, answered, "Mets, baby! I never should have left!"Like our president, I think he tends to answer these questions with utter absoluteness, but based on little more than his most recent interaction.
