The date is late, with little over a week left, encompassing just four spring training games, and one of those will be against Army. Time perhaps to be a bit more realistic with projections.

While Ty Kelly appears to be the best candidate for the open spot on the bench, there's the minor problem of him having been removed from the roster at the start of camp. Another option is to add Cecchini and make José Reyes primarily an outfielder, but I don't see Terry approaching anything that radical. Nor will he add one of the two remaining outfielders, Wuilmer Becerra. So if neither Lageres nor Nimmo can answer the bell, either Champ Stuart gets to summoned as purely a defender, or a solution from off of the roster will come. If not Kelly, maybe Taijeron.

But we at Roster Projection Central are predicting Kelly.

I'm counting 29 healthy major league bodies in camp. At this point, it's less interesting who gets cut and who doesn't, as whose health rallies and whose doesn't: Matz, Wheeler, Gorzelanny, Wright, Lagares, and Nimmo all have a good chance (to varying degrees) to open the season on the DL.

While camp has been too long a slog to suggest such a move is shocking, it's a pretty impressive reversal of fortune, considering I expected him to get DFA'd, removed from the roster, and possibly released before opening day.

Sticking is another matter, of course, but good on him. Gives the Mets a spare starter in the pen, too.

I hope Montero edges (if not Edgins) Lugo for bullpen spot. Let Seth stretch out for starting, keep Rafael away from the rotation. Montero's limited success has come in relief. His mom's conspiracy theories aside, I was less than thrilled when Lugo said he couldn't get psyched to pitch in a spring training game after the WBC final. Maybe that's true, but geez, don't say that unless you're tenured enough to admit it -- and even then, don't say it.

He seems like a fine young man with a fine young breaking pitch. Let him hone it a little more. Opportunity will knock.

I was thinking that Jio Mier might be Vegas bound earlier today, but the signing of Josh Rodriguez all but eliminates that possibility. Rodriguez, who went to camp with Oakland this year, will be returning for his third tenure with the Mets organization, and he'll likely make an ideal mentor for the tribe of young infielders out there. I'm betting he's joining the organization as a coach when he hangs 'em up.

Griset is the second Met this year who was a minor league free agent that I only learned re-signed when he got floated up to big league camp. For all I know, half those guys below have been re-signed.

Also, the grim reaper came calling at the end of camp for three dreamers. Becker is a Texas righthander—perhaps a descendent of the great Adelsverein Germany-to-Texas migration—who had a hard-to-ignore probelm with throwing strikes. Beeler is a Tennessee righty who couldn't stay healthy the last two seasons. Brooklyn reliever Ty Williams also had the injury bug.

It seems all but a fait accompli that Juan Lagares is heading to the DL, so Roster Central is forced to reverse course and congratulate Ty Kelly on making the opening day roster. All that's left is to finalize whether Montero has beat out Lugo (which I think he has, but the Mets want to keep Lugo in the family a few more days), and to figure out how to squeeze Kelly back onto the 40-man. I hope it is not a 60-day DL assignment for David Wright, but my fears butt up against my hopes.

I read in at least one place that Mickey Jannis and his knuckler are back in the organization, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ronald Sanchez is back also.

So the season that couldn't possibly be as DL-laden as last year's manages to start out with four presumed starters/significant role players on the DL before even getting to Day 1: Wright, Lagares, Matz, Lugo

I hope nobody mentions that this year's squad can't possibly hit worse with RiSP as the 2016 version did.
