Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 When you look at the top ten players for the Mets at each position, the names are obvious, but when you try and corral the top ten players the team has produced at each position, it's sketchier. Some positions have rarely been staffed by internal candidates, some have been staffed by guys who made their names as Mets, despite being originally signed by someone else, some have seen talent originally drafted by the team mostly prosper elsewhere. So here's my guess at the top 10 catchers originally signed by the Mets1. Todd Hundley2. Alex Treviño3. Ron Hodges4. Duffy Dyer5. Vance Wilson6. Mike Fitzgerald7. Alberto Castillo8. Joe Nolan9. Barry Lyons10. Kevin PlaweckiIt basically amounts to Todd Hundley and a whole lot of long-term platooners or outright backups. At least you know, the Mets have never dealt off a minor league catcher that has lit the world on fire for somebody else.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I expect Plawecki to outperform him but I might not put him at #10 yet. So howsabout Brook Fordyce? Or Josh Thole, maybe.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 Thole and Jason Phillips, to me, played good enough early on to get WAY too much rope, and ultimately ended up using that rope to become unambiguously net negatives. On the other hand, there's probably some hidden value that's hard to enumerate in Thole being R.A. Dickey's catcher.
