Way down yonder, where games are free and promo shots are late arriving, dwell the GCL Mets, a team buried so deep in the system that the Mets decided to discontinue them for a year. The players and coaches are 80% foreign born, but you'll see high school draftees take their turns too. That's where 2015's top pick Desmond Lindsey is currently parked, but he hasn't debuted yet. It's also notable that the further down you go in the chain, the more variation you get in performance, so you'll see .380 hitters, but also .120 hitters, as we sort through we mutations will take root and survive and which players will be washed up at 20.

Like their big league counterparts, the GCL Mets rallied for two in the eighth, yesterday, and hung on for the win, taking the GCL Nats down and tying them for first place in the Gulf Coast League's Eastern Division. Not bad for a team that has but one home run through their first nine games.

It's hard to tell who the stars are — some of these guys are enjoying their fifth pro season in "Rookie Ball" — but apart from Lindsay, Walter Lagrange has certainly made an early season mark. Eudor Garcia is demonstrating how drugs pay off, though he probably belongs in Brooklyn or Columbia by now. On the pitching side, Luis De Los Santos has been hard to touch, but again, he's not so young.

One curiosity is reliever Ronald Sanchez. Sanchez pitched one season in the Dominican Summer League for the Cardinals back in 2013, and then took the next two years off before resurfacing with the Mets this season. Go get 'em, Ronnie!

Watch out for hitting coach Yunir Garcia. Go ahead and Google photos of this guy. You'd be hard pressed to find a single shot that doesn't say that this guy means trouble. What influences are you exposing your young athletes to, Mets?

The Gulf Coasties had Desmond Lindsay working out with them, but he got sent up to Brooklyn without a single GCL appearance. This has left a void in the outfield, and in the prospect watching and the Coasters have lost five in a row.

Catcher Carlos Sanchez may be a player or he may be lightning in a bottle after three years in the DSL. A lot of DSL long-timers pock this roster, but draftees like Dariel Rivera and Matt Cleveland and Cameron Planck are starting to settle in and may change the character of tis team.

Speaking of character, would it kill them to have somebody pull out his cell phone and snap some mugshots. Sheesh, could there be a more nondescript team?
