The bottom line from the seven game 'series' that just took place (with a few days off in between) is that the Mets looked like the vastly inferior team, significantly worse in every
category including in our supposed strengths of power and the vaunted starting corps.

Atlanta Starters: 47.2 IP, 15 ER allowed on 31 Hits
NY Met starters: 43.1 IP; 18 ER on 46 Hits

Atlanta Pen: 17.1 IP, 3 runs allowed on 13 hits
NYM Pen: 19.2 IP, 12 runs on 23 hits

The bats, meanwhile, got out-XBH'd by 22 to 13.
Braves = 16 2Bs + 6 HRs
Mets = 8 2Bs, 1 3B, and 4 HRs

And if we care to get into the non-measurables, it seems fairly obvious that we didn't run, field, bunt or hustle as well as they did either.

I'd like to write it off to a bad week but I'm not sure we can. There was nothing, aside from maybe Matz's out-of-nowhere meltdown, that seemed out of character for any one player or that seems like it
would be easily fixable simply by tossing [insert personal whipping boy here] off the edge of the nearest cliff and bringing the next contestant in from behind the curtain.

And now we've got some Good teams lined up from tomorrow until the All-Star break: Nats (3) - Cubs (4) - Marlins (3) - Nats (4)
Do we really think that after not hitting the likes of Bud Norris and Wisler's grandmother that things are going to suddenly get better vs Arrieta, Scherzer, Fernandez, Lester, Gonzalez ?!?

In all fairness, Norris and Wisler have been pitching better than Scherzer and company over the last few weeks.

As terrible as the offense has been and as inconsistent as the 'pen has become... the Mets have actually gained a couple of games in the standings over the last week. (Picking up two just this weekend as the Nationals flail in Milwaukee.)

Cespedes looks beat. That was some weak shit he pulled on the basepaths this weekend.

Different game today maybe if Bastardo didn't suck. But geez, the guy really sucks.

I kinda like Reynolds but he might be most vulnerable to a Jose Jose return.

Zimmo! seemed to get a few strike calls go against him they don't call in the PCL.

Matz needs to get his shit together. Screwed up the bullpen.

Walker seems to have quietly vanished. We really miss Doodoo anchoring that middle of the order.

I like forcing young guys to earn their way into key spots in the order (look how batting Conforto third backfired), but Nimmo's main skill seems wasted hitting him seventh. Maybe they should put him ninth.

Historically, somebody breathing down his neck has led to hot streaks for Flores (for Tejada too, for that matter). Maybe that happens.

Wish I had more ideas than that. I don't like how Terry's managing and I don't like the hitting approach. But I don't like it when it works either. And it hasn't gotten the heat on Terry or Kevin Long yet.

de Aza has a week to try and make up for Saturday's crap show but if not, I think that he'll be DFA'd (de farewell Aza'd) when Jose is called up.

In part because they had been facing the Mets. Aside from his NYM starts Wisler had given up 15 runs on 24 hits over 12.2 innings in his previous three starts and Norris had been relegated to the pen prior to the last two weeks.
At some point you've got to stop 'tipping your cap' to good outings by mediocre (or worse) hurlers and look inward.

Yeah, counting on the Nats to go on their worst losing streak in like five years is a low percentage "strategy" of gaining ground.

The official autopsy results are in. They identify the primary cause of that patient's demise as a weakening of the parieto occipital junction. That is the part of the neural system system that controls the hand eye coordination necessary for hitting, fielding and accurately throwing a baseball.
If it is not corrected, the problem can cause the death of pennant chances.
