Kingsport opened their season last night, losing 4-3 at Elizabethtown, but got a WoW performance from freshly drafted lefty Thomas Szapucki, who Szapped 13 K's in 6 scoreless innings.

Just turned 20 years old, has a funky delivery and 92+ heat.

The Kingsporters had a double-header this afternoon. The availability of two games gave them a good chance to earn their first win of the year, having started the season 0-4. The story is the same as you've seen top to bottom. Far more pitching than hitting.

Still, even in that environment, someone stands out. And someone is Thomas Szapucki, who debuted with a 13-strikeout, six-inning performance. TSz walked none and gave up only two hits that afternoon, so maybe our 2015 fifth-rounder is a player to watch.

Also worth keeping an eye on is second baseman Walter Rasquin, out of Caracas, hitting .333 / .529 / .500 // 1.029 over the young half-season. Let's go, South American infielders!

So the other day, the Mets had the night off, and I check the system scores the next day, and it reads like this:

LAS VEGAS 4, OMAHA 2

    Yay, we rule. Great pitching!



BINGHAMTON 4, PORTLAND 0

    Two for two, and our pitching is UNSTOPPABLE!



ST. LUCIE 3, LAKELAND 1

    Really, how can you be a batsman and not feel sorrow going up against a Mets affiliate?



COLUMBIA 6, HAGERSTOWN 1

    FOOLS! Trying to out-hit the Mets! Or the Fireflies! Whatever!



BROOKLYN 3, ABERDEEN 2

    That's five games. Five wins. Five outstanding pitching performances. I'm on top of the world. What could possibly go wrong?



ELIZABETHTON 17, KINGSPORT 3

    Well, that's just ... WHAT. THE. FUCK?!

    Really, guys, can you get with the program?! Way to kill a totally good buzz. I wanted to blame the defense. You know, Appalachian League. They probably kicked the ball all over the ballpark. But I read the box score (because I hate myself, and there were no errors, and only one unearned run. The pitching was just atrocious. They walked nine dudes and gave up 19 hits. And because it's still more or less early in the short season, that one game is bloating everybody's ERAS. God thing they called off the bottom of the ninth, guys!

    Jerks.



GULF COAST METS RAINED OUT

    Whatever. The Kingsport game killed my buzz anyway.



So that's what you got with Kingsport. Questionable pitching. And in the last week, bullpen fixtures Max Wotell and Chris Viall have joined the rotation, along with recent promotee Six-Toe Torres, who hasn't appeared yet. The main exception was Thomas Szapucki, but he's been sent to Brooklyn, you know, to join a real team.

Ronald Guedez has been the best bull penner, and he's joined now by Darwin Ramos, who had been doing OK as a starter.

What they got going offensively are great on-base percentages. They're reaching at a .343 percentage as a team, which is more-or-less leadoff quality. They have three catchers, reaching at Bondsian rates of .426, .406, and .417 respectively. While the team is tied for fourth (and tied for last) in the Appalachian League West Division, it's on-basiness like that keeps them within 3.5 games of the division leader.
