We had a thread about 'em. I can't find it.

Already, the brand new Columbia Fireflies have their first no-hitter, a combined jobbio by Thomas McIlraith (six innings, two walks, six strikeouts), Alex Palsha (two innings, four strikeouts) and Johnny Magliozzi (one inning, three strikeouts, PHWAM!), ably assisted the whole way by catcher José Garcia. You have to like how the dominance increased late in the game. Click the link for interview snippets from the principles and the manager José Leger. It came in just their third game!

More generally, the Lightning Bugs sit in second place among the seven teams in the South Atlantic League's southern division, at 10-7, two games behind the detestable Charleston River Dogs.

Studding up for the Flies so far are second baseman Vinny Siena (who didn't go to Siena, but followed LJ Mazzilli at UConn), hitting .356; and third baseman David Thompson, with eight extra-base hits and 18 RBI. Starting pitcher P.J. Conlon has gone 2-0 in his three starts, with a 1.08 ERA. Closer Tyler Bashlor has struck out 10 in 8.0 innings and posted a 1.13 ERA, while saving two games.

This team's Tyler factor is decidedly high.

Down 3-2 in the 9th at Greenville last night, the Flies rallied for 5 runs and won 7-3.

Sheesh, I'm tempted to believe at least some of that is for real, but neither he nor Siena sniffed these numbers last year in Brooklyn.

Everybody please join me in playing a sad trombone for David Thompson, Columbia third baseman and organized baseball RBI leader, landing on the disabled list for the Fireflies.

But people... people! Check out the machine-like effectiveness of P.J. Conlon, leading the circuit in wins, ERA, and winning percentage, natch, third in WHIP and looking like he's high-stepping his way into prospect status. If he makes it, he'll be the first major leaguer born in Ireland since 1946, and the first born in the north of Ireland since the 19th century.

Latest from Firefly Theater: The offense is stumbling with the RBI machine that is David Thompson currently on the fritz and on the DL, but PJ Conlon's amazing season marches on, and he ties Sean Gilmartin and now Noah Syndergaard for the organizational lead in wins.

Yeah, win totals are a bad measure, but they make for good drama.

Wanna know what else about Conlon? He was scoreless in 17 innings out of the pen last year, so he's sporting a 1.51 ERA as a pro now, after 95.1 innings. I think I'm adopting him.

The Flies are riding their first season in Columbia to 36-34 record, 6.5 games behind the Charleston Riverdogs.

Mid-season must be tough time managing at the ground floor of the full season leagues. Not only do you get your best players bounced up a level, but your reinforcements are just starting their season, so you don't know what you're getting. You hope that your players who didn't star in the first half, and so remain with you, can step things up and lead the team in the second half, but their poorer seasons have already grown roots.

But sometimes God sends you something like Andrew Church, who has done well in the Florida State League but has been untouchable in the South Atlantic League. In three starts for the Fireflies, Churchie is 3-0, with a blink-and-you'll-miss it 0.42 ERA. He improbably out-pitched Jacob deGrom this weekend, throwing a nine-inning, one-hit strikeout, walking one and fanning 10.

Know what else is cool? That one walk? It was his first. Church's strikeout-to-walk ratio is sitting at a stratospheric 25:1. Suck on that, Dennis Eckersly.

Stepping up for the batsmen has been the thumptastic Tucker Tharp, clocking a .322 / .359 / .508 // .868 line through his first 68 plate appearances. Yeah, that's a small sample size, but a .500+ slugging percentage in the Sally League is a rare thing indeed.

But here's the thing ... that one-hitter by Churchmas? That's been their only win in forever, the team having lost nine of their last 10, burying the team in last place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division for the second half standings, posting a 6-18 notice. The Mets haven't been that bad in the Sally League since Tim Teufel was managing them to a .350 record.

You're on notice, José Leger. If you don't turn it around, you too might ... get socially promoted all the way up to the big league staff.
