Cargo vs. Cargo

Carlos Gonzalez: Having a nice, little bounce-back year, but has some disquieting home/away splits. I wouldn't say they were disturbing. I reserve that word for his lefty-righty splits. Mercy.

Carlos Gomez: Still a solid centerfielder, but having a poor year. Young enough that he may have a bounce-back of his own, but his secondary skills aren't going to magically re-appear.

What do you offer for either of these fellows?

I think Carlos Gomez is what we actually need. Can be a leadoff guy, and I think could probably be had for Lagares + a prospect like Fulmer. Maybe?

Mets also intend to look at Will Venable this week. He's the most Venable of all the options (but not max venable, that was his dad) but not convinced he's a big enough upgrade from Lagares to sell it.

I would start with something like Lagares-plus-Fulmer. I'd imagine that they'd ask for Rosario and/or Nimmo, a major-league piece like Lagares, plus a Fulmer/Ynoa-ish arm. Gomez is on a below-market deal for another season; I'd consider, say, Rosario-plus-Fulmer. Or, if you want to make things veddy interesting, dangle Harvey and see what else THEY'll offer you BESIDES Gomez (like a low-level arm or three.

Former Cincy + Washington GM Jim Bowden was on BB2N last night proposing all manner of trades -- keep the 'proposing' part in mind as he was making no claims of inside information of ongoing discussions or even rumors, just trades he'd like to see made. So anyway, he came up with:

Gomez + (LHR) Neal Cotts -- in exchange for -- Lagares + Montero + (PSL pitcher) Marcos Molino + Nimmo

Outside of Coors, Car-Go is a .260/20hr 30 year-old LHed corner OFer who hasn't played CF in 4 years and who has stolen 5 bases in the last 1.5 years. And he'll get almost $40m through 2017. Gomez provides a little less overall production, with less power and more speed, but is still able to play CF and bat leadoff, and he provides a RHed bat. Plus, he's only signed through next year, for $9m/yr. Plus he has Mets bonafides.
