Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 The Mets have only hit 9 triples so far this season. It's possible that 2014 will end up being the least tripliest season in Mets history. The current record for fewest triples by the team is the 14 that they hit in 1999. The only other seasons when the Mets had fewer than 20 triples were 1992 (17) and 2001 (18). The most was in 2009, when they had 49 triples. The Mets had 47 triples in both 1978 and 1996.1962 401963 351964 311965 271966 351967 231968 301969 411970 421971 291972 311973 241974 221975 341976 341977 301978 471979 411980 411981 351982 261983 261984 251985 351986 311987 341988 241989 211990 211991 241992 171993 371994 211995 341996 471997 281998 241999 142000 202001 182002 222003 242004 202005 322006 412007 272008 382009 492010 402011 392012 212013 322014 9
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Tejada replacing Rey-O certainly started it. More recently, a mix largely including Young and Abreu replacing most of Eric Young. That was certainly a factor.David Wright: 0 triples in 2014.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2014 Author Posted August 9, 2014 Jose Reyes only had 2 of the Mets' 49 triples in 2009. Angel Pagan had the most, with 11. Cory Sullivan (!) was second with 5, followed by Fernando Tatis and Daniel Murphy, each with 4. Luis Castillo and David Wright had 3 each. Six players had 2 triples, and there were seven players who had 1, including Josh Thole, Omir Santos, and Nelson Figueroa.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 To be virtually triple-less in this ballpark (5 at home, 4 on road) is really freaky-low. CF, even in its newer slightly smaller state, is built for triples.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 From FanGraphs park factor analysis:before the walls came in: HR 93, TR 109, overall 97 (many other factors contribute to the overall as well)after the walls came in: HR 103, TR89, overall 96Basically the dimensions change killed triples more than it boosted home runs. The park still favors pitchers on the whole (but never by as much as people have made it out to), but people's assumptions on how the park plays have not changed with the statistics. The analysis does not consider 2014 data yet. And obviously a big part of the drop this year has to do with not having triples hitters in general. (Our pitching staff has given up 9 triples at home and 14 on the road.)
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 I have no recollection of the triple-basing Cory Sullivan!
