Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 This comparison has been making the rounds lately so you may have already heard something about it, but it's still kind of cool to see it laid out.Miguel Cabrera turned 31 y/o on Friday, Below are his stats through that day as compared to Aaron's through his 31st (he turned that age during the '64/'65 off-season).PAABH2B3BHRRBIBAOBASLGMiguel Cabrera7,1826,2702,007416143661,267.320.398.566Hank Aaron7,2166,5102,085351793661,216.320.376.567Aaron had a few more PAs & ABs at the same point due mainly to his mostly full season at age 20 as compared to the partial one for Cabrera; each played virtually every day once they were called up.Cabrera walked more often [1,402 to 804] and has used his lack of speed to turn most of Aaron's triples into more doubles, but other than that the two career-to-date lines are remarkably similar. Now Aaron had one of the better late careers from among MLB's great hitters (more HRs in the back half of his 30s than in the first half) so it's still a bit early to start projecting Miggy's final stats, but check out the HRs, BA, & SLG.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Aaron was an excellent athlete, 6'-180 lbs, and was able to maintain this full-time pace for another 5 years before his playing time started to diminish over his last 5 years (though he was still productive despite more limited PAs in his final years, even having an MVP-type season at age 39). Cabrera, 6'4" 240 lbs, has been surprisingly healthy in his career to date, despite his shape being somewhat ovoid, but i wouldn't bet on that continuing for as long as Aaron did, given the greater strain his weight puts on his frame (knees, in particular). Still, it's been a pretty remarkable career to date.
