Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Lagares is a wonderful centerfielder, but as Delmon Young hit a rare drive over his head in the eighth, I saw his back turned as he headed toward the fence and, well, number 12 just doesn't give me confidence on a centerfielder. Part of it, I know, is the indelible Stearns association of my yute. I'm thinking of petitioning him to pull a Mazzilli during the offseason and switching to a number that speaks more of speed and slickness. A 12 to me is a bruiser. A pug. A palooka. Even the centerfielders that have worn 12 for the Mets --- Hairston, Dunston --- were migrants from another position.Exceptions were Cleon Jones (who played it early in his careeer and migrated to another position), Mazz (who migrated to a better number, as noted), and Tommie Davis (who migrated to another team). Number 12 in centerfield is just not sustainable.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 Numbers I like on centerfielders --- 1, 4, 16, 24, 25, 51. All are Met-precedented, of course. But I think 10 and 50 would look great as well. And certainly 21. I sure got used to Beltran in 15.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 12 might look pretty good on BrownTown. Or he could take Recker's 20.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 A Niuewy-Lagares CF platoon equals 21.Brown plays so infrequently he may as well have a pitcher's number. That assignment reminds me of something the Cardinals or Pirates would do, they always dress a couple of position players in the 40s.Recker in 20 reminds me of Mike Fitzgerald, that's an OK association for me.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 I have to say, 56 worked, though Torres did not.
