Had nieces in tow on Tuesday, and several hours to kill, with the weather looking... variable. So we caught this.

Latest from the House of Lasseter. Lusty lord's (Billy Connolly) luxuriantly-locked lil' lassie (Kelly McDonald) languishes under mother's (Emma Thompson) matrimonial marching orders. Lovely-looking landscapes and lush lochs mix with madcap, maniacally-modeled merriment. And hair. And bears.

I have my thoughts. What are yours?

Haven't seen it but I imagine Billy Connolly's voice grates after a while?

Is this similare to "How to train your dragon"?

Lunchpail saw this with Wifey Bucket. For what it's worth he thought it was pretty good but not great. Wifey Bucket thought it was a little scary for real younguns.

I'm with Pail. The animation is big-G gorgeous in spots, particularly with regard to the setting (no animated movie that I can recall has ever made me long to fly there ASAP like this one) and the other textural stuff (you will stare-- STARE-- at the hair in this one). Though some of the relationship moments between mother and daughter are nicely observed, the story is a little more color-by-numbers than the detailwork merits.

The bears are pretty cool, though.

And sadly, I was much righter than I would have hoped. I voted Millwood in the poll. And that's what this was -- wood from the Disney mill. A wonderfully executed product of a moribund imagination.

The Disney takeover of Pixar is complete.
