Ryan Gosling stars and drives cars.
He drives get-away cars, he drives race cars, he drives stunt cars ... and he does it all while managing to utter fewer lines of dialog and interact with fewer people than anyone who's in every single scene of a movie since Robert Redford in 'Jerimiah Johnson'.

Then one day he drives his cute little neighbor home because her car is on the fritz and his strictly-ordered life becomes a lot more complicated.

I love these existential anti-hero movies; this is a solid entry to the sub-genre.

It's interesting that many of these types of films are about drivers... VANISHING POINT comes to mind. THELMA & LOUISE, to some extent. But THIEF doesn't.

i'll work up a list with analysis at some point.

Saw this one last night. Liked it. Mix of creepy noir and big-time violence. Liked the girl. Liked all the minor characters.

Wondered how he cleaned up that mess in the elevator. Wondered why he didn't just deal with Brooks the way he dealt with the pizza guy.

same sentiment. gave it a 2.5 or 4/9.

I never really understood his motivation for anything. I wasn't sure if he was actually flirting with the girl or just being helpful. Overall it just seemed to be a poor excuse for a murderous rampage. "Here's a stunt driving scene to introduce the skin-mask thing for later" (Even though no one ever saw him in it and lived...so what's the point?

They introduce the husband for like three seconds, really just long enough to set up the job they need to get Gosling (did he have a name? I think they mentioned his name once somewhere..) another getaway driver job and start the rampage bit.

I guess all the crime/driving stuff was interconnected with the mob and he's always been part of that in some way. Just a low level grunt doing jobs when asked. The whole movie seemed to lack motivation for anything that happened and you never really understand why he's doing anything he does. Or why he's so skilled at combat and all that.

So really it's just a story about a low-level grunt that ends up having to kill a lot of people to protect a girl he likes. It's called Drive but there wasn't enough cool car chases and way too many scenes of awkward silence.

Just watched this on Netflix HD...liked it....I too wonder about his motivation Ceetar....I think that scene where he beats the guy to pulp and there's as moment with the girl, that's the real him. What was he before he showed up at Shans auto shop five years ago?
