bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 Phil Cuzzi with another bad call last night. Look at the video, below: the Mariners got screwed last night by Cuzzi, who can't count to four. That's the same Phil Cuzzi that helped the Mets win a game last July in SF and allegedly helped the Mets earlier this year against the Nationals (so this isn't a Mets rant). He also helped the MFYs win a playoff game against the Twins in 2009.http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2011_07_02_sdnmlb_seamlb_1&mode=wrap
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 My question on these things always is -- how did the pitcher/catcher/fielders/opposing manager all not realize what was up?Especially since it's not like the call on the first pitch - the only called strike of the bunch which could possibly been confused with a called ball - was ambiguous or anything. The remaining pitches were either swinging strikes or foul strikes. Sounds like maybe the scoreboard messed up pitch #1 (you hear the announcers say 1-1 rather than 0-2 after the second pitch) and that everyone simply went along with it from there. Not that any of that absolves Cuzzi or anything ... but, geez, pay attention folks. It's only your livelihood.

Cuzzi, or the Mariner manager who wasn't paying attention? If it's Cuzzi it would be surprising only in that you rarely hear umps talk about each other even on the quiet.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2011 Author Posted July 3, 2011 With such a track record, why is Cuzzi still a major league ump? Does he have tenure, like a teacher? Maybe MLB is waiting for him to determine a World Series game first.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 Phil Cuzzi, Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, Joe West. Nobody knows why they are still employed.

Home plate umpires who ignore the counter in their hand shouldn't be employed.
