Nasty for him

Prospect needs facial surgery

By Adam Rubin

Mets outfield prospect Sean Ratliff, a fourth-round pick in 2008 out of Stanford, was struck in the face with a foul ball while in the on-deck circle and will require surgery to address six broken facial bones by the eye and sinus. It's unclear whether Ratliff will need to have a plate inserted, according to team insiders.

Ratliff's vision is OK and any pain is manageable. He also required 15 stitches.

Ratliff, 24, hit .317 with 16 homers and 50 RBIs in 281 at-bats with Double-A Binghamton after a mid-year promotion from Class A St. Lucie last year.

That's my prospect. Bam. What a run this has been for men struck by batted balls in recent years. Facial plates, lost eyeball, lost testes, even a death.
