"You've Gotta Have Heart"

Or so Edward Emil Kranepool sang on this record:

But this interview with the TCPalm (where I get all my Florida news) suggests he's a little more guarded with his emotions these days.

"They have to make some deals," said Kranepool, who signed with the Mets as a 17-year-old. "They need pitching. You have to improve your ball club, but that's their decision to make. They have to compete in this market."

Two probs there. Firstly, he's brandishing the fallacy of equating competition in offseason wheeling and dealign with competition on the field. Secondly, he's playing the "in this market" card. Boo.

"Philadelphia keeps improving itself, so you have some pretty good teams to compete with."

Certainly.

"I only watch a good product," Kranepool said. "If they are winning, I will watch, and if not, I turn the station and root for someone else."

Damn, 'Pool, that's cold. Why waste time changing channels? Why not just stick with the same game and switch your allegiance whenever the lead changes?

"I am a Met true and true. I am the only guy who played his whole career with the Mets, I've got the longest time, longevity-wise ... but I still want to see a good ball club."

Well, on that first part, I hear you, but to be a little literal about it, there are a lot of DePastinos out there who might take issue (to say nothing of Ron Hodges). On the second part, sure, but if you know the answer better than Alderson, I'd like to hear it.

Sometimes when Kranepool has opined on how the team should be run in the past, I got the idea that he was still (in a perhaps deluded sense) angling for a piece of the action. Or at least trying to stay relevant. Other times, I just get the idea that he's turnnig into the most crotchedy old poop.

By the way, I've had that LP since about 1989 and I'm only now seeing that "KALVIN KOONCE" has his name misspelled. Took about 20 seconds to figure out who "Al Walker" was also.

Could you imagine if Ed won the race to buy the Mets from the Paysons?

He was putting together a team of investors. I'm not sure if they got their bid in. He envisioned himself on the talent procurement side, but it would have been difficult staying engaged while bailing out whenever the lead was lost.

wasn't aware he was in it.

I think he was part of a group considered to be a longshot. OTOH, the Wilpon-Doubleday group kinda snuck up on the field too.

I guess he can get away with such nonsense because he's Ed freaking Kranepool.

I like how on the record Ken Boswell is Kenneth Boswell.....in fact all the players names are in their given form.....who the fuck is Gerald Grote, I bet only his momma called him that.

And yet, we have "Joe" Pignatano and "Al" Walker. If you're going to get silly with formal names, why stop at "L. Nolan Ryan"? Why not swing for the fences with "Lynn"?

They swung for the fences with Cal Koonce and went with Kalvin Koonce.....
