Travor Hoffman hangs 'em up after 18 seasons and 601 saves --- which is a record until/unless Mariano Rivera racks 43 more of the little suckers.

Mark Simon --- doubtlessly referencing the UMDB --- points out that the Mets had their share of success against the guy. More than their share, really.

Immense due respect to the site I have listed first among my myriad Mets bookmarks, but Mark Simon is a walking, talking UMDB unto himself, I can assure you -- and gives credit where credit is due always.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean it as an indictment, so much as to point out that he was offering some pretty deep data.

No problem. And considering how little we saw of him in any given season, I really loved beating Trevor Hoffman.

Until he retired, Hoffman was the active player closest to Jesse Orosco's major league record for most games played by a pitcher (JO - 1,252; TH - 1,035).

With Hoffmans's retirement, Mariano Rivera moves up a notch, and is now the active player closest to Orosco's record. Rivera finished the 2010 season with 978 games played. Rivera, who needs to appear in 275 more games to pass Orosco, turned 41 last November. Rivera appears to be at least five full seasons away from Orosco's record -- no small task at Rivera's age, notwithstanding Mariano's stellar health record and pitching excellence. On the other hand, everything about Rivera's career has been otherworldly, so far.
