Edgy--you're right based on the way I phrased it.

Let me rephrase:

The problem is that right now, the "two", "three", or "four" pitchers (Ollie, Maine, Pelfrey) don't appear to be any better than the "five" pitchers (Niese, Nieve, Figueroa, Misch).

As for the fifth-options pitching better than (so far) the rotation incumbents, it's early, and the minor league and AAAA hitters are out-slugging our expected lineup. I supose that's in part due to (1) those guys coming to camp ready to fight, rather than to work on stuff, and (2) those guys, in many cases, having played winter ball, and therefore closer to the game-shape groove.
