Given the choice between having 1 backup option at a few positions, and 2-3 options-- even if one of those is essentially a "break glass in case of emergency... or long-term Cora starting"-- at those same positions, I'd probably rather have the latter, especially if the cost is comparable. As to first base... he's apparently better than Garko-- if only slightly-- and his primary value isn't as a starting first-baseman, anyway. If he gets one start a week at 1B and a corner OF slot, and is available to pinch-hit/double-switch into or out of the middle-infield slots, he's worth the money.

And as to the slumping... as Mr. Flood pointed out several weeks ago, in Keith's eyes, we're all constantly "flying open." His season-end numbers were still a respectable-- if more pedestrian than 2008-- .282/.339/.438, with a slightly-above-league-average wOBA of .339.

Murphy looked pretty bad for a corner infielder (or outfielder) at the plate last year, particularly against lefties. while it would be ideal to get a better player, the Mets should at least find him a platoon partner, and i think Tatis, while maybe not the best choice, would fit the bill.

Thsi is encouraging

Murphy spent three days after Thanksgiving living with David Wright at hitting coach Howard Johnson's house in Florida, getting on the right track with his swing while having fun watching the SEC Championship Game and NFL on TV. HoJo sees Murphy "realistically" doubling his home run total in 2010.

HoJo described Murphy as "one-dimensional" last season. Because Murphy had success in the minors going to the opposite field, even on inside pitches, he resisted pulling inside pitches last season at the major-league level.

"If you recognize that's what a hitter is going to try to do with that pitch, then you know you're not going to get any power from him, so you just keep pounding it in there," Jerry Manuel said. "That's kind of what happened."

Now, they've preached turning on inside pitches and pulling them to right field

Done deal, done pretty cheaply, says Mike "Made with Bits of Actual" Puma.

800K plus incentives, say Matt Cerrone's magical sources.

He concurs, although it's kind of muffled, since he's reporting from inside Omar's rectum.
