May have signed a minor league contract with the Mets, according to some parts of the Internet.

I kinda like him as a lottery ticket type: He won 18 games in '07 and has a career 125 ERA+, was once a good closer and whiffs em in bunches.

But he missed all of 08 and almost all of 09 with injuries and he'll be 34.

Don't listen to him, Om'. It's your show. Don't let these nervous Nellies make you panic.

Bart Hubbuch-- and those who echoed him-- were wrong. The source report is from El Nacional, the Venezuelan daily, and their reports have this as an offer, not a signing. Tampa's also interested; word is, though, that he's leaning Metsward, due to the Johan/Frankie contingent.

Good move. High upside, low risk.
But, if they're going after pitchers with a similar profile, (very good when healthy, coming off an injury) why not Ben Sheets?
Or Chin Ming Wong? (sp?)

Significantly higher risk. You're probably not getting either without several million and an MLB contract.

I'm definitely hoping on the former, personally, and a little more tentatively intrigued by the former.

apparently escobar's going to do a little throwing session in venezuela, to see if he can get more offers. perhaps he's looking for a major league deal?

also, mets are talking wang according to metsblog.

I had also read in the past that sheets is looking for major money... as in 12 mil a year. at that price, unless it's > 7 mil in incentives, I'd pass.

Holliday's looking for 23 million a year. I'm looking for an endless supply of braised beef ribs, and for my fiancee to switch to a hotpants-only wardrobe. You can't always get what you want.

I think Sheets ultimately signs for something like 5-8 million with significant performance bonuses and/or vesting attached.

well, apparently, the yankees are 'very interested' in sheets now, so he may get his contract...and just in time for christmas too...

Women --- why are they so unreasonable?

I'm flexible. I'm open to a ribs-only wardrobe as well.

if you want to talk other pitchers who are injury risks, but high upside, gotta also think about mulder and bedard.

that said, at the beginning of the offseason, i would've liked folks who were a bit more durable given our 09 season. however, at this point, giving a few of these guys some incentive laden deals wouldn't be such a bad idea.
