Anyhow, I hope this helps and is readable.

Yes, and yes. I've worked my way through about half of the pages posted here, and I appreciate the help you guys have been providing.

It's interesting that, in some years, it looks like there would only be two or three players on the disabled list all season long. (That's hard to imagine in the wake of the 2009 season.) I wonder if that's accurate, or if the media guides aren't as thorough as they should be.

I seem to remember that in the past there were limits to how many players could be on the DL at a time. There were a certain number of slots on the 15-day, and another number on the 21-day, and then there was the 60-day. And there also seems to have been an "emergency disabled list." (I don't know what the story is on that.) But maybe these limits caused teams to hesitate to disable a player. For example, it looks like Jerry Grote wasn't on the DL at all in 1972, although he seems to have missed a lot of playing time.

This seems to be basically what 1965 adds up to:

Kevin Collins, Shoulder Surgery, 4/22/1965-9/1/1965

Ron Hunt, Shoulder Surgery, 5/12/1965-8/5/1965

Dennis Musgraves, Sore Elbow, 8/9/1965-9/21/1965

Collins told me the shoulder injury occurred while he was making warm-up throws in the infield before what would have been his first major-league start.

It's amazing how some years have so few DL stints, and other seasons have so many. There seem to be a lot fewer in the earlier years. I wonder, is it because of fewer injuries? Or because the rules of the time somehow made teams be more conservative about using the DL? Or is it because of incomplete data in the media guides?

I suspect it's the second reason I listed, that it's some reflection of the rules that were in effect regarding the disabled list. But it's just a guess. I don't know for sure what changes have been made, although it seems that the 21-day list was eliminated at some point along the way.

I wonder if with todays high priced players the DL is used more than "back in the day" , with more money invested in players and all that. I guess that's what grim is wondering above too.

I also think there may have been a maximum number of players who were allowed on the DL at any one time, which may have discouraged using the DL for nagging injuries so that you'd have open spots on the DL for the more serious stuff. Jerry Grote, for example, was injured throughout the 1972 season, yet (as far as I can tell) never went on the DL. He just had severely reduced playing time.

Now that the season is over, I've once again been motivated to take a fresh look at this.

Here are the media guide seasons that I'm still missing. (Meaning that there may be disabled list transactions from the previous year that have not yet been logged.)

1963
1964
1965
1967
1968
1969
1971
1972
1974
1991
2006
2007

The full list of transactions that I've entered can be found at this page.

And, below, are transactions that I know about but have not yet entered. (I still have to figure out how, or if, I'm going to log the military time.) And as for the injuries from 1972, 1977, and 1989, I'm going to see if I can find out what the injuries actually were. (I'm pretty sure that Felix Millan's was a separated shoulder from when he was slammed by Ed Ott of the Pirates, but I want to get that confirmed by some contemporary source if I can.)

Thanks once again to everyone who helped with this way back last fall. If anyone can help fill in some of the remaining gaps, I'd very much appreciate it.

1969 MILITARY LIST
Ken Boswell 5/30 to 6/15
Bud Harrelson 6/25 to 7/11
Tug McGraw 7/6 to 7/20
Ken Boswell 8/9 to 8/11
Nolan Ryan 8/11 to 9/1

1970 MILITARY LIST
Nolan Ryan 6/26 to 7/16
Ken Boswell 7/14 to 8/3
Mike Jorgensen 8/14 to 9/1

Bill Sudakis 4/14/72 to 7/10
Jim Beauchamp 7/10/72 to 8/1
Bud Harrelson 8/3/72 to 8/25

Bob Myrick 7/5/77 to 7/29/77
Felix Millan 8/13/77 to end of season

Mark Carreon 4/2/89 to 4/25
Tim Teufel 6/5/89 to 6/23 89
Barry Lyons 6/27/89 to 7/25/89
Dwight Gooden 7/2/89 to 9/2

Here are 2006 transactions as reported in the 2007 Media Guide.

Posted (edited)

Doc in '89 was a small tear back of the shoulder.

Teufel in '89 was sprained right ankle.

Lyons in '89 was broken right toe.

Carreon in '89 was I Don't Know but it happened before the season began; when he was reinstated, he was optioned to Tidewater.

Myrick in '77 was a strained muscle in right rib cage.

Millan in '77 was broken collarbone and separated shoulder.

Harrelson in '72 was a strained back.

Sudakis in '72 was right knee still in need of strengthening after it had "ironically" damaged cartilage in a 1971 collision with Duffy Dyer (according to '73 yearbook)

Beauchamp in '72 was I Don't Know, but '73 yearbook says series of shoulder strains earlier in career robbed him of "sure-shot stardom".

Two UMDB notes I came across while pursuing my rich, full life during the 2010 season:

Andy Green played 1 game at 2B and 1 game at 3B in 2009 -- his defensive info is not listed on his player page and he's not listed among all-time second basemen and third basemen (leaving those totals one player short)

Dave Roberts signed as a free agent on January 5, 1981 and was released May 27, 1981; his transaction info is not listed on his player page and he's not listed on the Transactions page
