Piggiestomatoes Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Gary mentioned it during last night's broadcast but the Mets are now 4 for 48 with bases loaded and two outs. [Charles Barkley] That's terrible. [/Charles Barkley]
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 That's frustrating as a fan, but it's also the sort of thing that one can make too much of.1) How many of those outs are made by players who don't hit much anyhow? If I have the number-eight guy up with second and third and two out, I walk him to get to the pitcher. Managers work it so the lesser guys get a greater percentage of the better opportunities.2) Which is more likely to self-correct --- that a team hits disproportionately poorly with two outs and the bags juiced, or that they hit very few extra-base hits? I say worry about getting better hitters in place and the clutch stats will largely even out. Jerry last night was asked how it felt to get that kind of offense and he said something to the effect of "right now" looking for good pitching performances --- as if even after a day like yesterday, he knows the offense he's trotting out there on a daily basis is close to hopeless, and he's putting his mental energy toward shutting the other team down and seeing who will be prepared to pitch for the team next season.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Unless you believe in the "Clutch Fairy" (ie you're a Yankees fan who licks Jeter's balls), those numbers will even themselves out over time. I'd worry about the general suckitude of the offense in allsituations.
