Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 snooze reporting]Young Urbina joining MetsJuly 2, 2009While there has been no official announcement, the Mets are believed to have come to terms with 16-year-old Venezuelan lefthander Juan Urbina. He should receive a signing bonus in the $1.2 million range. Urbina's father Ugueth spent 11 seasons in the majors, going 44-49 with a 3.45 ERA in 583 appearances (21 starts). The elder Urbina is in jail in Venezuela, though there are hopes he'll be freed soon.http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/#ixzz0KCQpU2FH&C
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 According to Baseball America, he's a skinny 6'1" lefty with a biting 88-89 mph fastball... at 16 (figure that he's got at least 4-5 more mph in that arm before he's done growing).$1.2 mil for a top-10 international talent with that kind of gas? Sounds worth a hack./Tip your waitstaff, stick around for Elaine Boozler, don't set any of your farmhands on fire
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 At least his name doesn't start with 'U'.Urbina is the only "Big" name player from the current crop of int'l teens to sign w/the Mets so far - although even this one isn't official yet and others may trickle in over the next few days. Yesterday was the first day these signings could take place and most of the time teams don't like to announce things until all the paperwork is complete.
