Snoozeday beatwriter David Lennon blogs:

]Four-out saves for K-Rod? Don't ask
Figured it might be worthwhile to ask Frankie Rodriguez this morning about being used for a pair of four-out saves during his stint with Team Venezuela. After all, it was something that he hadn't done in a save situation since August 17, 2007 (He pitched 1 1/3 innings in the playoffs last October). His last four-out save actually was way back on Sept. 14, 2006.

So, um, Frankie, are you going to need a bit of a breather back here to recharge from those longer save situations?

"Why should you tell me that Im not ready to get back?" Rodriguez said. "I think I put a lot of work into it. I prepared myself really good before every game, so I dont think its going to take me 10 days or two months to get my energy back. Its going to be right back the next day.

"I dont know what youre honestly trying to tell me or what the point is youre trying to get at. A four-out save is like a three-out save. To me, its the same. I know people have made a big deal about four-out saves. I want to have the same opportunity here, too. I dont know why its such a big deal."

OK, then.

Frankie suffers the banal not lightly. Let's hope the brilliant Chico Harlan doesn't compare him to Horatio Sanz.

He's right. There should be more four-out saves, not fewer.

If the situation calls for your best reliever to get you out of a jam with two outs in the eighth, then you should absolutely use him.

If he can't handle the banal, he will have scant honeymoon time with the New York press.

If K-Rod doesn't blow any saves the first week or so and he's allergic to the banal, then he'll be a rugged competitor who lets nothing get in his way. If he sucks and he's short with the media, then he'll be too thin-skinned for their awesome inquisitions.

Though it would help his cause if he'd put on the vertical swastika. Then he'd be golden.

I think we just may owe Gordon Edes-- he of last week's WBC article-- an apology pretty soon.

Playing in the same city as Derek Jeter should make things easier for him. And it will make his food taste better too.
